Hello to everyone i hope you are all keeping well at this time with the corona virus that is threatening us all. Please can anyone tell me what i can buy to stop this terrible pain of gout - this is the second flare up in five weeks and i do not know what to do and i cannot go out as i have COPD/ASTHMA and hayfever - i was told that i had to buy my own medication but i cannot get out to get it and what should i get anyway - perhaps i can buy something online from Ebay

if one of you lovely people have any idea just what. Keep well and thank you.

Was it your GP who told you to buy your own medication? Did you not ask for a suitable suggestion?

Hi there - yes the GP said i was to buy my own medication - i said i could not afford to but he said you will have to - end of conversation as he put the phone down. So i just buy a couple of things and the rest i go without. The trouble is i do have many things wrong with me - but it is GP's who have diagnosed me over the years and have told me all what is wrong with me - now they think that i have made it all up - so i tell them to look at my medical records (which i do have copies of Cost me £50 - but at least i know that the GP's are lying to me and i can prove it - but to who as i have been dealing with Advocacy for quite a few weeks now and she even said that my previous GP was going to re-instate me at my old surgery - i was happy about that - but then three weeks later she said that they were not going to do that - they wonder why i lose my self control (and i do) it is Advocacy for all - except me. I know that gout can be dangerous for kidney disease and i only have one kidney (lost the other due to GP's neglect and my one remaining kidney is at stage three kidney disease and has been for a good five years or more) and i am supposed to trusts GP's no way - i had to have my lungs washed out as i get pneumonia and i also had a CT scan with contrast dye and it made my one kidney collapse - the hospital panicked then - but it all turned out okay. Sorry for the long reple - keep well and virus free. and thank you.

I have had gout continuously since last September. Nothing I tried, including the Montmorency Cherry, worked. So reluctantly, I have just started taking the Allopurinol and Colchicine that was prescribed to me by my GP. I am waiting to see what that does.

People keep telling me that it is something that I am eating (today it was suggested that I don't eat peas!). I am tea-total, vegetarian, and have now stopped drinking black tea. I have also changed from wholemeal bread to white, and take locally made organic cider vinegar with the mother. I also take turmeric and magnesium daily with my other supplements.

Uricplex has good reviews but is quite expensive (more so as you have to keep taking it). So I would go back to your GP and ask for the prescription medication that you should be entitled to. My main reservation with starting the prescription drugs is that Allopurinol is said to lower the immune system response, but the pain was so bad, and for so long, that made up my mind for me.

Hi there - sorry for the late reply - but i am still in pain with it - i got a new GP who would only give me my two inhalers for COPD/Asthma but i have been told that i have to buy the rest of my medication - which is quite a lot - i have never had an appointment nor even been to the new surgery - i rang the chemist and asked if i could buy my medication over the counter and he said no as he is not allowed to do that - i have never been treated for gout - but i am worried as i only have one kidney and that is at stage 3 disease and gout will only make it worse. So i will just have to grin and bear it as to buy medication privately is expensive - i already buy my own eye drops from my optician- B12 injections/needles - but i will not say on here where i get them from. I wish you good health and keep virus free. Thank you.

There are prescription drugs for gout, not sure what they are but they did not work for me.

I have now been taking "cannabis" capsules from Holland & Barrett.

The ones I'm taking are Jacob Hooy CBD 60 Capsules 10mg, just one a day right now.

They seem to have partially reduced the ongoing problem which is a permanent lack of sensation in big toes. This is only early days and will increase the dose if it doesn't work after all the 120 capsules are gone.

Hi there - sorry for the late reply - my condition is still ongoing and my new GP said that i must buy my own medication - i have never seen him nor even had an appointment - only a telephone call saying that i must buy my own medication - but due to other things that i have wrong with me the chemist said he cannot sell me anything - i did manage to get one script from the new surgery in March for two inhalers for my COPD/Asthma but that is it and because i have so many things wrong with me i am afraid to even try buying anything from the chemists online. Thank you for your help and keep well.

Hi Xeena,

My Husband has had gout for a number of years, it was first brought on by a bad reaction to antibiotics. It was so bad he couldn't get out of bed and had to have the Doctor to see him.He has been on Allopurinol for 20 years now, and that is probably the only thing that is any good. He was prescribed strong anti-inflammatories for the pain to start with, but doesn't need those now. There is probably nothing you can buy that will do the same job.I know you can't really see a Doctor at the moment, but can you not ring the Doctor and get him/her to diagnose and prescribe on the phone then pick up the prescription? It is not something that will go away once you have it unfortunately, and if you don't treat it then it will damage your joints.

Hi there - thank you for the reply - sorry for the delay in answering but i am still not feeling to good as it is still ongoing - thank you for your comments - but it is a new GP that i have and have had since March (i was without a gp since the beginning of October last year until March this year i was told by Advocacy that they had assigned me to a new GP as above, Well i have not seen him nor have i had any appointments and when i rang for a script in March i only received two COPD inhalers and then i asked in April for a repeat script i was told that i had to buy what i needed - so i asked the chemist about all of my medications and he said he could not sell them to me - but he did warn me about the gout making me ill as i only have one kidney which is at stage three disease - so i rang Advocacy and told them what was going on and they said there was nothing else they could do - so i really do not know what to do now. I have read that Gout can damage the kidneys because of the uric acid and high cholesterol and i also have osteoarthritis which is part and parcel of all of this. I do hope that your husband is well now and hope you are both keeping safe from this virus.

Hi, sorry you're going through all this. Yes gout is bad for the kidneys, my Husband has to have a blood test every year for it.He is fine now thank you and we are both keeping away from the virus at the moment. Both my Mum and Sister are on the Governments list for vulnerable people and can't go out at all.It is a nightmare trying to get online deliveries as they are supposed to have priority but the supermarkets don't seem to be keeping to it and don't care.

I can't believe that no-one can prescribe the medication you need, this is a disgrace!

Hi there - this is the same for me i am on the Governments register as i am disabled and classed as vulnerable believe it or not but i rang a number for tesco's and there is also one for sainsbury's - i will see if i can find them and put them on here for you. I have not been out since the 14th of March and i do not have a garden - it is driving me crazy. Thank you for the reply - i will look for the online shopping numbers and put them on here for you. Take care and i am glad that your husband is well now.

P.S. forgot to say that nothing you eat or drink will make any difference and will not cause it.

Hi there - here are two numbers for you to try for online shopping - Sainsbury's register for support 0800 0288327 and Tesco delivery slots 0800 917 7359 - i did my first Tesco online shop on Thursday and i am getting it on Tuesday - you just have to tell them that you are on the vulnerable list - Tesco shopping slots are between 10 and 12 noon - Sainsbury's are similar - they will tell you when you can go online and you book your delivery slot first - you pay a delivery fee but if you go for midweek and do not mind what time them it is cheaper - my slot is between 10 am and 6 pm in the evening - i hope this is of some use to you - Sainsbury's also do like a credit card voucher that you can choose how much you want to spend - and it can be given to a relative or friend and they can shop for other people as long as they have that card with the money on it. Take care - hope your Mum and Sister find this of some use.

Hi, thanks for your help, I will give them to my Sister as she orders for my Mum as well. Not sure the numbers she currently has but she can try these. Last week she couldn't get any delivery for my Mum so I took some food down, but not allowed to go in of course.Did see her briefly from a distance.Cried when I got home as I couldn't hug her!

Hope you keep safe.

Oh dear i am so sorry that you could not give your Mum a hug - i am sure that she would know that you wanted to - and it was lovely that she could see you - even at a distance - i just wish that my daughter wanted to do things like that - i never see her, she moved away nearly a year go and i do not hear from her nor do i see her - I do hope those numbers are of some use to your sister - take care and keep safe.

Hi, yes we speak every other day on the phone, very often we both nearly end up crying!I am so sorry that you don't see or speak to your daughter, it's times like this that you need your family, even though you can't visit. I gave those numbers to my sister, they were different to the ones she had, so hopefully she will get more sense with those. Kind regards.

xeena in reply toblondpalomino

Hi there - i hope they can help your sister to get a slot (i had forgotten something that i needed in my shopping - so i just went on and added it to my list) and Tesco will be delivering it tomorrow. My daughter and her boyfriend took my bank card and took £10,000 pound out of my account and i did not know anything about it for a couple of months and when i did the bank would not help as they said that i had given her my card number - which i had as i am disabled and she used to do some shopping for me - she and her boyfriend paid a deposit on a brand new caravan and then four weeks later they broke up and although he had used my address for the finance there was nothing i could do about it as i had given her the card number for my shopping - will i ever learn - so she has stopped speaking to me now. If you cannot trust your daughter who can you trust. - Keep well and i hope those numbers will be great for your sister.

Oh God I am so sorry. How could she do something like that to her Mum?I expect if she had asked you would have given her some money.I understand now why you don't talk to her.

xeena profile image
xeena in reply toblondpalomino

Hiya - she had already had £1,500 out of me to get her car mended - which i let her have as a birthday and christmas present - the thing is when her and the boyfriend took the ten thousand pounds for the caravan it was my address that was used for the finance and nothing was ever paid off of what was owed as they split up and it was sold - it was a brand new caravan and the boyfriend then went on and used my address again to get a new car - the bailiffs even turned up at my door and wanted to know why the caravan had not been paid - i gave them his car registration and told them where he worked and off they went - i have a pile of bills and letters still in my home for him as i did not have a forwarding address when he and my daughter split up and she used to live just ten minutes away from me. She had two daughters and the first one she did not want and gave to me to raise which i did - she was just six weeks old when i took her on and she now has three children of her own then when she married she had another daughter that she did not want and her then husband raised her for a few years and then she also came and lived with me - they both had good and happy lives and the youngest daughter is now expecting her third child in about six weeks - so a new grandchild to look forward to. As you say - you now understand why i do not talk to her - keep well and thank you for just being there.

Hi there - thank you for the reply. My situation is still ongoing as the new GP that was allocated to me will not give me an appointment and i have never been to the surgery - he rang and told me that i have to buy my own medication (he did send one script but no more) i have COPD/ASTHMA and he let me have two inhalers only - then he told me to buy my own. I rang the chemist and he said no he cannot sell to me over the counter what should be on a script - so i just buy my eye drops from Amazon and B12/Needles from somewhere i cannot mention on here. There is a lot of medication that i should be on but this is how it must be now. Keep well and virus free.
