How to tell you have a fever with low nasal body temperature

How are people like me with low body temperatures such is mine which is usually about 36.2 supposed to know if they have the fever associated with coronavirus as this will only show as a normal body temperature. I am really worried as I wouldn't know if I was ill as also have copd and therefore cough quite alot.

I’ve taken mine when I don’t have a cough, cold, sore throat, & sinusitis & when I have any combination or all four & feel dreadful. I’m lucky to be just under or over 36 on a good normal day, & reach over 37 when running a temperature. I also feel as though I’m hyper if I don’t drop T3 fast enough.

Keep monitoring your temperature first thing, as recommended by the Barnes basal body temperature test. Information re this is online but basically take your temperature as soon as you wake before doing anything to increase it.

Being in a flap won’t help your stress levels so keep yourself warm, eat well with lots of fresh fruit & veg for potassium & vitamin C, avoid public places if you can, & wash your hands if in contact with stuff from the outdoors. 🌡🦠🧼🧴😷🤗

This weekend I’m making garlic soup. 🧄🧅🧄🧅🧄🧅🧄 Hopefully nobody will come anywhere close enough to infect me.

You will know if your temperature is elevated because you will feel hot to the touch ( to yourself) on chest and back. You will also feel unwell. I have similar low body temperature and I can sensdifferencewhen it rises from usual around 36.6 to 37

I think if you get Corona virus you’ll feel ill. As I understand it the advice is to self care unless you have breathing difficulties. You are in a higher risk group so with breathing difficulties you recognise as dangerous, worse than usual ( you know your body best) you call either 111 or 999 as appropriate.

My basal temp is never above 35.8, I dream of having 37.4 🙂 so I understand what you mean.

I think if a virus hits you badly your body’s defences raise your temperature so I think, but I’m not sure, ours would rise.

Hope you stay virus free.

It is important to tell them on 111 That you have a low basal temperature! See the link I have put below for more info

A related thought - have you provided your GP with the results of basal temperature monitoring and asked them to flag up in your notes so that they are available to anyone who needs to access your notes?

I'm currently recording my BT over a period of time as when I saw my GP in Feb (when four weeks into a flu-like viral infection), and told her I ran low temperatures normally, she looked at me as though I had two proverbial heads.

At the time of the consultation, the room was oppressively hot and I thought I was going to faint if I stayed for any longer. I was also visibly perspiring. Yet when the GP took my temperature it was 'normal' but she wouldn't listen to me when I said that this wasn't an accurate indication of how I was feeling i.e. boiling hot!

When I was in the acute fever stage of the virus my temperature was around 38 - way above 'my' normal, which hovers between 35.9 and 36.2.

So, my strategy is to record the BT, send to the GP and ask this information to be added to my notes in case a fever isn't recognised.

It's only recently occurred to me that the reason I can't tolerate being in the refrigeration section of supermarkets for more than a few seconds is that my temperature is probably dropping to hypothermic levels!

Not that medics take any notice.

It's good to read your posts. I have been concerned by people being diagnosed by temperature readings at airports and so on. I would sail through as 'normal' even if having a high fever. My normal is 36.4 on average. Today it was 36.1 on waking. Last time I had a severe virus infection-the one that would go away and come back for weeks in 2018 , when I was sweating and shivering, my basal temperature was 37. I've met with the same incomprehension from GPs about this phenomenon. Let's hope we don't have to test it out with this new virus.

I agree with all comments.

I was thinking exactly the same. My temp has been between 35.5 and 36.1 for the last few days

For a few days, my young son and I have been fighting a virus (couldn’t confirm whether it is the Coronavirus). He had a temperature of 39C for 4 days, sore throat, stuffy nose, a bit of a dry cough. We immediately started self-isolation. The rest of the family seem to be symptom free. I had a temperature fluctuating between 36.4 and 37.5, felt like lead, couldn’t get out of bed, headache, felt very hot despite normal range of body temperature and kept putting cold wet flannels on my head which got hot. It still feels like my sinuses are enlarged, and I lose energy very quickly.

Unless we test for these illnesses we won’t get an understanding of how different people are affected, and as you say identify people who might be infectious. If none of my family were obviously ill, I might think it was me having a bad day with my thyroid.

I completely agree about testing especially for NHS staff but just self isolating doesn't tell ANYONE if they have,or have had the virus and may still be infectious or contagious,we need to get it right and fast!!!!
