Cause of 0 Testosterone?

M33R4 profile image

I am 51, going through menopause, have hashimoto's which is controlled by Porcine Dessicated Thyroid.

I am fatigued, losing muscle, skin getting thin, face muscles are slack, my thighs tummy bottom are speckled with cellulite, intercourse can be painful due to tightness, libido is low.

I asked my GP for a testosterone test which came back showing I have 0 testosterone.

Anyone know the cause of this?

I'm assuming you have done the obvious searches? The following links have some suggested symptoms and causes for low testosterone in women :

healthline.com/health/low-t...

medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

healthfully.com/215579-what...

One of the things mentioned in those links is that the adrenal glands produce some testosterone, and poor adrenal function may reduce testosterone levels. Also hypopituitarism might be implicated in the problem too.

it is fairly common for either or both the adrenals and the pituitary to be poorly functioning in conjunction with hypothyroidism.

I think I may have the same. How did you test ? By yr gp? And what can you do aboit it?

I had hormones tested 2018 estrogen progesterone and testosterone all very low. My gp did the tests as I asked for them but said he didn't understand hormones. There is fb page group and they said my results were so low I needed HRT. It makes me dizzy and nauseous. Iv tried bio identical and now estriol topical cream. I went straight into menopause after tt age 49 bit depressing really as I developed atrophy a few years ago which is uncomfortable to say the least. My husband has been really understanding as nothing has worked so far but I am sad that that part of our life is over. I'm told most women breeze through menopause and still frisky into their 70's unfortunately not me, I am also told most ladies thrive on one little levo pill after tt but again unfortunately not me, I had years of feeling poop until I fought tooth and nail for T3 only 4 years ago. Feeling so ill with no thyroid I think myself an my Dr took our eye off the menopause bit, maybe if I had been offered low dose estriol cream back then it might have stopped the atrophy but thats hindsight for you. All hormones are linked and for me removing my thyroid had a catastrophic effect on me physicallyand mentally. You need a referal to a menopause clinic sooner rather than later. GPS know virtually nothing about thyroid they know even less about hormones. If you can afford it find a good bio identical specialist as you need balance not a massive HRT hit of all hormones. Xx

Have you been offered Estradiol pessaries? They will reverse the atrophy in a matter of a week or so. They are very low in oestrogen - 10 mcg.

The pessaries didn't work for me, iv moved onto the cream for 2 months and no change :(

Sorry to here that. They worked a treat for me, but everyone's different. Hope you get sorted.

Sorry to hear you have had and continue to have such a dreadful time. I think it is bad GPs carry out testing they do not understand or cannot treat when a problem is identified.

I have heard of people coping well with menopause and lots experiencing it much later in life. I have friends of sixty dreading it starting. I cannot even imagine that “friskyness “ into my seventies. I was forty when the menopause visited, mercifully short but grim. No testing of any hormones been needed for me, or perhaps this is a change in NHS policy.

Unlike you I have never undergone TT as my thyroid was destroyed by radiation in the early 1950s .

I am sorry I can not offer any practical solution as I just had to accept that the changes to my body had happened and get on with life. My husband was not thrilled but had to accept it. I hope you and your husband are able to move on together. On the plus side it is lovely to see now there is some hope from some members here.

Ideally your GP who felt the tests were necessary will have done some reading and know what the treatment should be. Good luck

I asked gp for the tests and he was good enough to do them but was unable to help but it gave me the info i needed to join a group who could understand the results. Yes hubby has been very sweet, after 24 years together we are still really affectionate and cuddle up, we had many years of friskiness and a good relationship is not just sex so we have accepted it but i still hope there is a solution, not the end of the world if i dont but i suffer with optimism xx

Endomad just to add you can use both the products together,I think from memory it’s called glide and slide lol.so use the oil based stuff internally then slap on the water based lubricant on both of your interested parts and try some gentle penetration, not full on rumpy tumpy, maybe try some gentle finger penetration first few times then as you both relax you’ll do what comes naturally.im 45 years married we’ve grown up together and nookies not the be all and end all but it’s like chocolate, nice to have the occasional treat lol.good luck xx

Sounds like good relationship advice from Thrones.

Dont forget that there is more to making love than intercourse alone that you can try with each other.

Low Testosterone also has other signs and symptoms such as low mood, weight gain, etc. in my view its important that you and your doctor address this matter, not just for your love life, which is very important in a relationship.

Testostereone cream is avaiable and in some cases on the NHS. I've seen it advertised on on some online pharmacies. If you do buy online i suggest that you are very careful in its use, inform your doctor and try to get him/her to monitor your testosterone levels.

in reply toholyshedballs

Hi there holyshedballs.if my memory serves me correctly only a meno consultant can prescribe testosterone as it use is classed off licence, the gp would usually rely on the guidance of a meno consultant and not normally prescribe themselves unless directed to do so.theres only one product I know of available for women is androfemme I think it comes from Australia and it’s very expensive the others products are designed with men in mind so you have to be very very careful in your dosage and alternate the application sites and you must be carefully monitored.they just don’t know enough about testosterone supplementation in women and although I was prescribed it by a consultant I felt very uncomfortable on it and stopped it’s use.i couldn’t get on nhs by the way and had to pay for a private script was around £70.all I’d say to anyone is never buy these things online ,be guided by your consultant and work with your gp and you may have to use an online pharmacy sometimes to source private scripts from a meno consultant but be diligent.good luck xx

I'm not up to date with testosterone but will be because I also have a reduced libido. Its a hormone so I expect a referral to an dreaded endocrinologist.

Plus im a man with supposedly higher testosterone levels which I why I said what I said above. Women have to be very careful with testosterone cream as you said.

Women's reference range for testosterone is lower and narrower than men's.

Womens range 15 to 70 ng/dL

Mens range 270 - 1070 ng/dL

so a reltively small amount can be be too much for some women depending on where their own natural level is/was.

(bearing in mind the illogical use of reference ranges by some doctors)

0 in you and endomad is clearly below the bottom of the reference ranges. In fact its non existent!!

I hope endomad finds a way to increase her testosterone and achieve a fulfilling love life. Plenty of good advice on this site.

Good morning endomad .if you are still having issues can I recommend you try the yes products and preferably the oil based products,I was really awful had what is best described as paper cuts and two big bleeding sores and was in agony,I’m going back almost 3 years now and I tried everything but was so allergic to most products it was torture.i started off with raw organic coconut oil to heal the sores and can’t tell you the relief I felt that first night, nothing from gp had helped and in fact I had bad side effects with the hrt treatment my body couldn’t handle the side effects so that’s why I had to try other routes.after using the coconut oil ,from well known health store, I started to heal very quickly then I switched to the yes oil based it’s super rich and you can use it inside and out ,same with the coconut oil.I had my hysterectomy over 20 years ago kept ovaries and was offered no treatment,I’m a lot wiser now having researched and learned as much as I could about dealing with this by changing lifestyle and diet.hope this helps you.take care x

Thank you for your kind reply I will Google immediately, which ones should I be looking at? Do you have a link so I know what I'm looking for. That gives me hope as tbh just thinking about it makes me clamp my knees tightly. I don't know what's wrong with me this morning everything is making me weepy, so much that I'm feeling a little ridiculous. I am usually a very abrasive character lol not prone to emotions at all :O

in reply toendomad

Sorry endo had a bit of an emergency here sorted now.

Go online to yesyesyes.org and you’ll see the products line or amazon also do them but remember to get oil based as I found the others a bit watery/stingy.

great advice from madge re freezing the coconut oil as it’s runny when stored at room temperature but solidifies even in the fridge so you can make little pessaries and pop in at bedtime it’s great for thrush too ive never had it for three years now,so many health benefits from raw pressed organic coconut oil little blue tubs avail from H&B for two quid if money’s tight or get the bigger size if you can afford it.

It has no shelf life will safetly keep for years.

I hope this helps but honestly know it will even after first night of using it you’ll feel such a relief.take care xx

Ps endomad it’s just the situation going on around us ,everytime I see some elderly person on the news I blob my eyes out it’s so emotional and I desperately want to go help my neighbours but right now id be more of a risk to them as my husband has to work, essential staff,so I darent and we are all new residents in retirement flats so no one knows anyone yet.keep positive it’s just a bleep day it’ll pass xx

you CAN get it online in little sterile applicators

But if you have a delay then buy Coconut oil as suggested by Thrones.

I used a Mellon baller into the solid Coconut oil to make little balls ...and put them into a clean polythene bag .. and then into the freezer ... keeping everything ... sterile .

Then you can insert anytime .. especially at bedtime ... don’t forget to use a little pad to collect overspill

You’ll feel Sooooo much better .

But look for Yes Products online and see what you find there .. Wonderful Stuff and last for days too .

Feel better soon

Luv Mx🌹

Sorry I’ve butted in on your post I’m also zero testosterone my meno consultant actually put me on it and I hated it I got the most awful sensations downstairs that I just didn’t like at all but I do know people from another site who swear by it for libido etc I can pm you details if you’d like to look in on them maybe get some meno advice.

I’m hoping my replies to endomad may be of some help to you too.take care xx

Came across this very interesting thread whilst researching woman with low testosterone...My testosterone levels were tested earlier and it came back as 0.5. My issue is that since the menopause and going onto HRT my ability to climax has diminished dramatically...it’s very frustrating...my GP suggested I try viagra but could not get any...tbh I wasn’t particularly keen on viagra in any case...any advice would be appreciated cx
