Hi Dickydon
Do you have a thyroid problem? This seems to be your first post on our forum.
If not then your question would be better directed to the Pernicious Anaemia forum here on HealthUnlocked which is dedicated solely to PA and B12, they will be able to fully explain what Pernicious Anaemia is and help you if you think you may have this problem:
Short answer—yes. Anaemia is usually shorthand for iron deficiency anaemia—a shortage of iron/ferritin in the blood.
Pernicious Anaemia occurs as a result of Vitamin B12 deficiency (caused by a lack of intrinsic factor).
thanks for reply and clears that up.
PA is auto-immune. Do you have Hashimotos ?
Thanks for reply.
No, certainly not that I’m aware of.
Have you had your anti-bodies tested ? People with PA often have Hashimitos too ...
Marz, I’ve made an appointment with GP to look into this further. I already have the B12 injection; I’m also a Type 1 diabetic; have a pacemaker and two leaky heart valves that are awaiting open heart surgery. So there’s a lot of medical things going with me and not surprising I’m very tired all the time.
I have scrolled through your previous posts and can see you mostly post on Heart Fora.
I am sure you are very aware of the connection between LOW T3 - the Active Thyroid Hormone - and heart issues. I have a book - Thyroid and Heart Failure - full of Research papers from around the world connecting the Endocrine system with the heart - most are available on PubMed.
Do you have the correct thyroid testing done ? Sadly the NHS VERY rarely test the most important thyroid hormone FT3. You can have tests done privately in the comfort of you own home. You need good T3 levels for the heart... check out - Low T3 syndrome and hearts. The NHS donot test both anti-bodies - TPO and Tg - so no point in asking your GP ...
Also important to test Folate - Ferritin and VitD.
Always obtain all test results with ranges - so you can monitor your own progress and check what has been missed ! The results are legally yours.
Are your B12 injections enough - the Guidelines have changed and it is possible to have them every two months. Do you have any neuro symptoms ? Low Ferritin - Folate and Vit D can cause fatigue. B12 works with Folate in the body in a special way - are you supplementing ?

anaemia is basically a blood disorder in which red blood cells are not formed correctly for some reason. The most common form is iron based anaemia which makes your red blood cells smaller than normal but there are a lot of other different types of anaemia.
Pernicious Anaemia is actually an auto-immune disorder which affects the gut - attacking the mechanisms that allow you to absorb B12 leading to a B12 deficiency - and one symptom of that is another type of anaemia in which your red blood cells are larger and rounder than they should be. This type of anaemia can also be the result of folate deficiency.
