I am new here with hypothyroid

paulla profile image
13 Replies

I have had hypothyroid for about 3 years and have been taking thyroxine but sadly it has not given me the energy I hoped for. It however, has helped with other symptoms of hypothyroid - hair has stopped falling out, the gritty eyes are better, oedema is less and control of weight.

I cannot increase my dose because I find it makes me feel quite ill with a bad headache and only take it during the night. I have since found out I have other endocrine problems, may be for future discussion. I work part time in science.

(I have written something previously but I can't see it anywhere.)

Definitely try working out and changing diet. Gluten tires me down and attacks my thyroid. I tend to sleep all day when I eat it. Do a juice fast. Try even going vegan for a while. I felt the best when I went vegan and worked out a couple times a week. Keeps thyroid healtht.Yes, its work but you feel AMAZING,

in reply toAshchan30

But be careful, especially if going vegan. Meat and dairy products contain a lot of nutrients that are less easily got from plants. Which means you may have to supplement.

Exercise is good but not too much as it depletes T3. I used to go swimming regularly but eventually I was exhausted for the rest of the day and just couldn't go on. A brisk walk for half an hour or so is OK though. (Mind you, I am in my 70s now!)

Extreme dieting is also not good if you are hypo. Last year I fasted for several days (drinks such as soup only). I felt happy and relaxed but became so lethargic - almost ready to hibernate! But, unlike bears etc, humans can't easily recover their energy when it's time to wake up. Long term extreme dieting might even downregulate the axis (lower metabolism even more than hypothyroid condition itself does).

I'm sorry but you get EVERY healthy nutrient from plants. Omega 3s don't originate from fish. The fish get it from veggies. Dairy and meat are diseased and very unhealthy. They are also very acidic and cause cancer, candida, and break down bones (osteoporosis).

Your comment got me thinking. so I decided to do some research.

“…you get EVERY healthy nutrient from plants”

There was a time when it was possible to get everything we needed from plants, but not any more because everything has degenerated - plants, our bodies, the environment etc. Plants are no longer a healthy complete food for humans. We would need huge stomachs like cows do, full of helpful bacteria, to properly process most plant food! Al that we need may be there but it’s often not in the right form for us to digest and use.

"Omega 3s don't originate from fish".

No of course not, but the Omega oils found in plants are in a form that is not well balanced for us and harder to digest.

healthline.com/nutrition/7-...

“Dairy and meat are diseased and very unhealthy.”

Many plants are unhealthy too, or contain poisons. The migraine tablets I take (thankfully don’t need them very often now) contain a tiny bit of extract from a poisonous fungus that is a disease of plants. But in bigger amounts it can kill.

“They are also very acidic”

Ever sucked a lemon? That is acidic! So is vinegar which is made from plants. Most fruits contain ascorbic acid, (vitamin C), which we need. And we can't digest our food properly if there isn't enough acid in our stomachs. Which is common in hypothyroidism.

Our blood needs to be the right PH balance (acid /alkaline), but our bodies automatically fine tune this within very tight margins. We would die pretty quickly otherwise! And the acidity of our blood has almost nothing directly to do with what we eat (although the keto diet could cause problems). Here's something explaining causes of the blood being too acid: healthline.com/health/acido...

“and cause cancer, candida, and break down bones (osteoporosis).”

Lots of things can cause an overgrowth of Candida, including too much red meat, too much sugar, being diabetic…"

Re osteoporosis, there doesn’t seem to be much solid evidence:

This article is about the idea of milk making acid and causing osteoporosis chriskresser.com/does-dairy...

And: osteopenia3.com/Milk-Osteop...

Too much meat, or any high protein diet, is bad for us, like too much of anything. But eating no meat at all may make you deficient in essential nutrients such as vitamin D (essential for bone health) and taurine.

And, if you are deficient in calcium, it seems that eating meat may actually help as it contains higher grade protein (more easily digested and containing more of the nutrients that we need).

The reason may be that the acid in our stomachs (often low if we are hypothyroid) increases when we eat high protein food, which dissolves more calcium. nutritionfacts.org/2014/07/...

So eating some meat should actually help our bones!

One, no one goes sipping on or eating vinegar and lemons every day. People, however, eat dairy amd meat in every meal, which is a nesting ground for cancers, and candida, etc.

Also, what nutrient do we not get from plants? Please name a vital nutrient that we absolutely must get from dairy or meat.

Lastly, it doesn't make a good argument to say, since we have to supplement with plants, just eat meat and dairy instead. A few supplements and a healthy diet is way better than eating meat JUST FOR a few good nutrients. What about the cholesterol which our body is NOT meant to consume... or their protein which our body actually has a very difficult time digesting? Red meat? That stays in your digestive system for many hours and starts to decay.

To each their own. Its not rocket science. Theres plenty of research that clearly spells out how much more healthier a whole foods plant based diet can be. People have HEALED their Hashimoto's and thyroid issues.

Also, lemons and vinegar (apple Cider) actually turn alkhaline in your gut and are very healthy to consume daily. I encourage you to research this. It's quite amazing, actually! It restores the gut and heals acne. Drink with a straw of course as it can corrode the enamel.

Where is your source that most plants are poisonous. That simply isnt true.

I disagree due to the research and nutritionists I've spoke to but that's ok! All in moderation ^-^ I'm not trying to make anyone go vegan. Just thought I should share some facts and offer good advice. Not trying to argue with anyone. People should do what they think is best for them. If you feel good eating meat and dairy, go for it. It's about how you feel. I hope you find what you're looking for. I want to try Bovine Thyroid hormone. Thyroid from cows instead of the synthetic kind. Maybe this synthetic stuff is what's making us feel like junk ahah.

My apologies of I got rude. Everyone has the right to think as they please. Was just trying to offer a change. She wasnt freling well and well, I wanted to offer what I did to feel amazing. Again, to each their own. Blessings!

Ashchan, I think you replied to me and thank you. I don't get on the internet too much, only 2 to 3 times a week.

Your advice is good but I cannot go along with the vegan diet I am afraid, (although I go along with vegetarian) I don't eat much meat anyway, but I need the red meat for its iron. Also without meat we need to have supplements and I don't take many of those. I cannot imagine going without eggs, to me they are the ultimate super food. I can knock up an omelette in minutes, or boiled eggs with a salad.

I cook a bean dinner with lots of veg a couple of times a week and I eat what you might call a Mediterranean diet often. Partly because of ill health (allergies) I have got a very good healthy diet (also because of my job.) Pastries, cakes, sausages - high fat, high sugar foods -are not part of my shopping - but lots of fruit and veg with some fresh fish and meat are.

Like you, I have been through all the advice in health books - eating this and that will make you better - and some of it gets extreme. For example a book I looked upon as a 'bible' growing up emphasised the use of milk and calcium - 'calcium for calm' and many supplements. Now looking back it is probably the reason I seem to have some sort of calcium overload. Probably messed up the calcium homeostasis?!

It has to be said I do admire people that are so disciplined that they can keep off animal foods, but I will miss them too much.

Thank You for your response. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes partake in dairy and meat, and honestly I feel the worst. But when I go vegan, and exercise, I feel amazing. Especially with apple cider vinegar diluted in water. But darn, it's tough to eat healthy. You have to want to do it but once you do and have plenty to make (cus I get bored with the same thing aha) it gets easier. I want to get to a point where I go full blown. But I'm alittle weak right now and that's partly due to the junk I'm eating lol. Also, spinach and lentils have amazing protein and iron. People often mistakenly go for foods not too healthy for the body just for a few good nutrients when there are larger risks and negatives of eating it. I encourage you to watch the short documentary, "What The Health" and "Forks Over Knives" . We have to want health, you know? You can not be forced into it. I'm glad you are eating more veggies though. I need to eat more than I am for sure ahah. God bless! And yes...the same doctors back then that encouraged us to drink milk for stronger bones are the same doctors that recommended smoking for health and crazy toxic tonics...
