Cost of Liothyronine in Australia

Just saw a little information about liothyronine cost in Australia in the Guardian.

Do remember that Mercury Pharma liothyronine used to be branded Tertroxin in the UK. De-branding was how they ducked price controls.

Someone in Australia replied to a comment:

That was just a generic tablet, no brand name but our government prescriptions site does list Arthrexin, Eutroxsig and Tertroxin all for the same $41 price.

41 Australian dollars is currently just over GBP 21.

Do you know how many tablets you get for your £21? Are they 20 or 25 mcg?

The Tertroxin are exactly the same as Mercury Pharma liothyronine in the UK - dose and, I believe, number.

I found the reference to dose... 20mcg per tablet, but couldn't find a reference to the number per box.

Looks like 100! (In other words, I was wrong!)

That is surprisingly good value! Lucky Australians!

Do you know if you can get it sent to the UK? - if so, at those prices it might be a good post-Brexit option :)

So is it £21 for 28 tablets?

Do you know whether you can buy the liothyronine without a prescription please? I have family in Australia and wondered whether they could buy it for me? X

No, you need a prescription in Australia.

I'm an Aussie who takes it. Its 20 mcg, 100 tablets. $41 is for those who have a Medicare card.

Thank you.

Appreciate the confirmation.

Do you (as in, the Australian market) still get Tertroxin - made in the UK?

I believe it is made in the UK. I have taken it since 1992 and the packaging has never changed - I know it was made in the UK as we had shortages around 2003

I was prescribed Tertroxin made by Aspen in Australia and paid something around $40. Didn’t agree with me so I even had compounded NDT prescribed but that was more pricey around $120. I fee best on Thai Thyroid S.

At one time, I thought that the product supplied as if Aspen was actually made in the UK!
