I have seen people complaining about that on thyroid forums, but never seen it on a list of symptoms.

Thanks - never seen on the list of symptoms either ... but good to know it may be a complaint. Thanks for reply

Hi caz1725

That's not so strange because my urine smells to I have my own test strips at home like you I thought maby I had an infection because even after flushing the loo you could still smell it😫 I did a test strip for two days which showed white blood cells in my urine so I took a sample to my docs it was dipped but came back ok 😳😳 also it looks awfull never clear and I have weird aches at my sides I got a full blood test on my last test for my six weeks thyroid also I have no thyroid and doc said my kidney test was off but no follow up of that seeing GP soon so will be asking about Levo/and urine output...it's always something with us thyroid sufferers...😜😜

This happened to me every time I took PTU for Graves. Always stopped when I stopped. Doesn't happen with Methimazole...so maybe it's your medication?

Could it be linked to low water consumption ? Urine should be the colour of champagne by mid afternoon ! I find the darker the urine - the stronger the aroma !

Maybe we should just drink champagne 🍾

I agree with that completely 🍾 Not linked to low water consumption unfortunately . Thanks anyway 👍

Darker urine is a sign of dehydration.

Yes mine does and it’s something I’ve always wondered about too.

Similar to the smell you get after eating asparagus although I don’t eat that.

I was surprised to learn that the ability to smell asparagus is a genetic trait.

What I meant was that although I don’t eat it now, I have had it before. Not that I’m superhuman. Lol

I take Selenium and it gives a strong odor to my urine. I don't know if you do

Taking supplements or other meds? B vitamins, specifically B1(thiamine), gives urine a distinct odor.

Thanks - no supplements

My B- vitamins give my urine a bright yellow color.

B2/riboflavin. It looks like turmeric and makes urine yellowish orange. Harmless.

I have the same thing. I never had it when I was on Synthroid for many years, but I do have it now on NDT. I have tried various NDTs and they all caused the smelly urine and it’s always darker regardless of how much I drink. I mentioned it to my doctor and she looked at me like I had 3 heads, but I know it’s somehow related to the medicine. Urine tests are always negative.

I have had the same issue for years and always wondered about the strong odour. Very interesting.

So glad this has been brought up as I have the same but have no infection, can’t remember how long ago it started meaning before or after TT.

I have to drink gallons everyday to weaken urine /reduce dark colour. I have been treated for hypothyroidism for over sixty years. Only recently (last 18 months) been medicated as protein in urine. I have no memory of how it was before diagnosis as I was a child. I suffered for many years with fluid retention, that has improved in the last couple of years as now treated for gout. If you get an answer let us know.

FYI: I was told by a person who suffered from interstitial cystitis that a urine culture & sensitivity can be required to catch this problem. Don’t assume from a routine urinalysis that one has no urinary system infection always.

Thanks Clarissa - urine cultures don’t always catch interstitial cystitis either... it’s an odd one re embedded infection too. Everything has come back negative ...you are completely correct that you should never assume no infection from routine analysis.

I believe this happens when we don't have the enzymes to digest properly what we have eaten - though as with so many things, I expect there are several causes.
