Hi All

I have all the symptoms of an overactive thyroid. I have had my test results come back and doctor says they are ok but I’m not sure as my T4 levels are 20pmol/L 12.00 - 23.00pmol/L are these within normal range? My TSH level is ok at 1.81.

Can someone please advice. Thank you in advance.

I'm sorry if you've mentioned this before, but are you on thyroid medication? If so, which one(s) and how much?

Your TSH is close to 2 so not indicative of an overactive thyroid which instead tends to suppress the TSH.

It's often said that a person with a healthy thyroid gland without latent thyroid disease has a TSH of 1 or lower.

Your FT4 levels are close to the upper normal limit but not above range and this is where many people on T4 only drugs feel well.

What are your symptoms?

Thank you for your response. My symptoms are insomnia, anxiety, weight loss although eating more than normal, thinning of hair and feeling very unsettled.p & uneasy.

Certainly not feeling myself so tying to figure out what’s happening, I’m not on any medication.

Presumably you don't have a diagnosis of any thyroid condition and are not on any thyroid meds?

If that is the case then your results are normal.

my T4 levels are 20pmol/L 12.00 - 23.00pmol/L are these within normal range?

You can see that with a range of 12-23 then your result of 20 is within range so is classed as normal.

A normal healthy person without any thyroid problems would have a TSH of no more than 2 and FT4 would probably be around mid-range +. So both your results would be classed as euthyroid (normal).

When it's said that TSH should be 1 or lower, that is the aim for a hypothyroid patient on Levothyroxine.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Low ferritin can cause hairloss

Low vitamin D insomnia
