Just found out I'm pregnant 10 months after my Total Thyroidectomy, advice needed please :)

Hi,

I had a Total Thyroidectomy in January and was told last month that my levels are normal. So my partner and I decided to start trying for a baby. I've been very fortunate and just discovered that I am 2-3 weeks pregnant. I've booked an appointment at my GP for Thursday. I'm currently on 150mcg Levothyroxine, Vitamin D and I've been taking folic acid for the past month. Is there anything else I should be aware of and is Thursday too far away? I'm worried as I was told I'd have to increase my dosage as soon as I got pregnant. Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊

Congratulations

What were your most recent blood test results?

Pregnancy guidelines

gp-update.co.uk/files/docs/...

See pages 7&8 - it says here to increase Levothyroxine by 25mcg as soon as you get positive pregnancy result

Ask GP to test thyroid and vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 this week

Referral to endocrinologist too

Make sure you get TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested. Privately if necessary

Hi JaneyJaney, well actually they managed to lower my TSH over the past 9 months. In March it was 12, in June it was 7 and it was 3 when I was last tested at the end of August and they were happy with those results so we started trying at the end of September. I'm feeling very lucky that I'm now pregnant so obviously I want to do everything I can to protect my pregnancy. I'll up my Levothyroxine next time I take it, I just hope everything goes ok. I've been feeling nauseous since the weekend and a bit crampy but from what I've read that's normal, I hope xx

Yes that's right, they only found the cancer after my thyroid was removed, it was unrelated to my graves disease.

I've been back and forth to see my endo and gp over the past few months and they've all been fine and I had the same concerns you've mentioned. They said it was right inside my thyroid so it was entirely removed and my TSH has been coming down but not immediately suppressed, my other levels are completely normal. I think because it was an "incidental" finding they're not worried about it. They've been happy with my progress and tbh I feel the best I have in years. x

Also, they were well aware of my plans to start a family, my care has been great so far :) x

So very happy for you xx

No, that was never mentioned, they said it wasn't anything to worry about as most people get it. They said I needed no aftercare for it, I spoke to a few different endos and my GP who all said the same xx
