Dentist avoidance!

I need to go the the dreaded dentist but can remember a long time back folk saying the injection can cause a problem. I have PA, Hypo and Hashi.

Have any members got some information that would be helpful, would be much appreciated by this coward.

I think it's the adrenaline in the injection that can cause problems. I never used to mention it before but after my episodes of tachycardia with a sky high blood pressure, I asked my dentist for adrenaline free injections which she's happy to do (I think she tends to use those normally for most people anyway).

Many thanks Seasidesusie - it came back to me when I read your reply but I had forgotten about the alternative, now to pluck up courage and make an appointment.

I do feel for you as I hated going to the dentist right from a young age and my teeth were a weak point all through life.

However, I do think things have changed and by coincidence,I have just come from a check up appointment.......The receptionists were very pleasant,there were flowers on the counter.....music playing in the background.

Certainly wasn't like that years ago.......all helps to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Now in my late seventies it's all about preserving as much as possible and my teeth are not good but my dentist is always very cheerful and was able to do a filling of a collapsed tooth while I was there. I think they do their best to help us deal with our nerves these days.

I've never bothered to ask what my dentist uses, but have never had a problem. I also have a heart condition, but even when I had four lots of injection in a few minutes, during a small procedure last year when the pain seemed unwilling to admit defeat, I was perfectly okay.

Anyone with heart problems should routinely be given an adrenaline free local so assuming your medical records are up to date your dentist is doing just that, hence you haven't had any problems, but it's worth checking next time you go, ex dental assistant here 😉

bantam12 - not sure if my medical notes are up to date - not seen a doctor for some years - I gave up as banging my head against a brick wall brought no results for the better but I will make sure he/she is made aware of any relevant issues, thank you for making me aware of this.

As I just replied to MaisieGray your dentist should ask you to update and sign your medical history record every check up visit, if they don't then remind them !

Thanks for that bantam12 . We always chat about thyroid matters as her Mum is also hypo and on Levo, but tends towards non-compliance re her meds; but I can't remember if I've ever in fact added my cardio issue to my records. I must check when I'm next there - if I remember, because I've been put on 9 monthly appts now.

Oh dear, they should ask you to update your medical history every check up appt.

If you have to have an injection ask for citanest/octapressin and I find it doesn't cause a bad reaction (which I've had in the past).

Hi I now ask for adrenaline free injections. They take a bit longer to work but I used to get terrible palpitations and I never knew why! I got the information from a post on here and I have not had a problem since.

I have Ehlers Danlos (hypermobility). This means that most local anaethetics do not work. The medical profession usually does not believe me, although it is a documented fact. They think I am making it up when I say I can feel everything. Dentists usually have adrenalin free local, but only one sort, so any dental work for me is painful.

Saying that, there are no NHS dentists in this area. I have been on a waiting list for 3 years and can expect to wait another 2 before I may be assigned a dentist within a 60 mile area! I try not to smile in public any more for fear of scaring small children!

I went through that one for 4 months whilst waiting for a treatment some years back, hand over mouth as much as I could, wicked witch of the west.

Hope you get some help soon but with things as they are it could be a long wait.
