So TG is Thyroglobulin and ab is autoantibodies. So you get TGab.

Thyroglobulin(TG) is in your thyriod and important to Thyriod function. With an autoimmune disease such as Hashimotos our own bodies defence system destroys the thyriod thinking it a foreign object. When this happens thyroglobulin is leaked out where it shouldn’t be so our body then creates special antibodies to clean up - thyroglobulin autoantibodies, TGab.

So it’s not the TGab that’s attacking your thyroid, they’re just doing the clean up but because they are very specific to the thyroid gland their presence in the blood stream indicates that the cause of your symptoms are a struggling thyroid.

So there are a number of theories as to why ones own immune system would mistake the thyroid as an invader, inflammation, stress, environment, genetic predisposition. I think the list could be endless.

How long attacks last, how fierce it is anyone’s guess 🤷‍♀️ how your thyroid health/function is can only be determined by TSH initially (sometimes not always) and FT4 and FT3 results. TGab and Anti -TPO tests are only really good at telling you that your thyroid decline is due to an autoimmune condition. After that most believe that monitoring these levels are not useful. I’m not sure I’m fully on board with that. Maybe as different factors are used to calm down the immune system maybe TGab and Anti TPO levels lower. Or maybe as the thyriod is destroyed less TG/TPO are released 🤷‍♀️ I dunno. We could go down a rabbit hole thinking about it and what could or couldn’t be happening.

The main thing is keep an eye on FT4/3 levels and you’ll be well.
