CONCLUSION: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a safe and effective method to treat benign, solid, complex, hot and cold thyroid nodules preserving thyroid function. Further developments of the system are needed to gain suitability for daily use.

Exciting times indeed for those with thyroid nodules. Suitable candidates no longer need to lose their thyroids!

Its been some years since this paper, and the procedure is already being offered in hospitals. While it's early days, outcomes from the procedure are largely positive and hold out much hope for suitable patients.
