Unfortunately without reference ranges it's impossible to say. Ranges vary from lab to lab so we need the range that came with your results. Also, are T4 and T3 Total T4 and T3 or Free T4 and T3?

saadi26 profile image
saadi26 in reply to SeasideSusie

T3 total 94.2 ng/dl ref range 84-172

T4 thyroxin 5.38 ref range 4.5-12.5

TSH 2.58 ref range 0.4-4

Do you have a diagnosis of a thyroid condition and are you on any thyroid meds? We need to know that so we know how to interpret your results.

You haven't said if they're Total or Free T4/T3 but it looks like the T3 is Total and that's not a useful test at all. T4 I can't tell if it's Free or Total, if it's Free T4 then it's way too low.

TSH in a normal healthy person would be no more than around 2-ish. If you don't have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism then your thyroid may be beginning to struggle, but if you can confirm whether T4 is Total or Free that will help.

If you do have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism then you are undermedicated.

Possible to send u an image of the report ? I’m not on any meds. It’s been almost 2 years. Was on thyroxin for about 2 years before that. It made me shoot up my weight and was v unhappy with the depression it infused

You can add a picture to the opening post of a thread, so you could edit your first post here and add the picture, make sure you don't show any personal details (name, date of birth, NHS number, etc) and ensure the picture is big enough to be readable.

How to edit a post:

support.healthunlocked.com/...

If you are already on this page then obviously you don't need to go to your profile and select Posts, you just go straight to MORE and click on the downward arrow V support.healthunlocked.com/... and select EDIT then upload your photo

I tried to edit and post but it won’t let me post the pic/ image from my iPhone library

I can't help with the technical side of things.

Why not just type in exactly what it says on your report.

Or contact HealthUnlocked (who provide the platform for this forum) to get advice on posting your image

So here goes:

FreeT4 0.87 ng/dl ref range 0.89-1.76

TSH 4.456 uIU/ml ref 0.55-4.78

Free T3 2.5 pg/ml ref range 2.3-4.2

Ferritin 155ng/ml ref range 5-148

You have given two different sets of results.

In your original post:

T3 total 94.2 ng/dl ref range 84-172

T4 thyroxin 5.38 ref range 4.5-12.5

TSH 2.58 ref range 0.4-4

and now in this most recent post:

FreeT4 0.87 ng/dl ref range 0.89-1.76

TSH 4.456 uIU/ml ref 0.55-4.78

Free T3 2.5 pg/ml ref range 2.3-4.2

Ferritin 155ng/ml ref range 5-148

As the TSH is different I presume they're results from tests done at different times.

Which set of tests do you want comment on?

What makes you think "My thyroid report I think it’s textbook?" as you asked originally.

You said "I’m not on any meds. It’s been almost 2 years. Was on thyroxin for about 2 years before that. It made me shoot up my weight and was v unhappy with the depression it infused".

Presumably you had a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and now you've stopped your Levothyroxine. Did you not discuss with your doctor how you reacted to the thyroxine and what did he say?

Allow me to be clear. The results I posted initially were from April 2019. I have been on homeopathy meds since I stopped taking thyroxin 2 years back. And homeopath dr said test results seemed fine.

I discussed my condition with my thyroid dr before stopping it. They wanted to increase the dosage but I was feeling so unwell that I got disheartened and simply didn’t want to go along with allopathic path to treat it.

The results I posted today are of free T3 free T4. So I would appreciate comment on today’s posted results.

FreeT4 0.87 ng/dl ref range 0.89-1.76

TSH 4.456 uIU/ml ref 0.55-4.78

Free T3 2.5 pg/ml ref range 2.3-4.2

You have TSH almost at the top of the range, FT4 below range and FT3 very close to the bottom of the range. These are hypothyroid results. It would seem that whatever your homeopath is giving you for your thyroid isn't working.

You need thyroid hormone replacement and if Levothyroxine didn't originally suit you then you need to try a different brand.

Sounds advice. Shall look into it. Thanks

Those numbers are meaningless without ranges, and that looks like a total T3, not a free T3 results, which is not useful. But your TSH is too high for someone on thyroid meds and higher than most healthy people (who have a TSH around 1.2)

So here goes:

FreeT4 0.87 ng/dl ref range 0.89-1.76

TSH 4.456 uIU/ml ref 0.55-4.78

Free T3 2.5 pg/ml ref range 2.3-4.2

Ferritin 155ng/ml ref range 5-148

Advise pls

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Low vitamin D is extremely common in UK, but especially if you have darker skin

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

If/when back on Levothyroxine.......Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's.

Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances are very common too, especially gluten. So it's important to get TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once .

How much Levothyroxine were you on previously?

Far too many people are left on too small a dose

Thank u for such a detailed and informative advice. I’ll get the free TPO thyroid test done ASAP. Vitamin D b12 all r fine.

My thyroxin dosage was around 25 if I’m not mistaken.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to saadi26

Standard starter dose is 50mcgs Levothyroxine unless over 65 years old

The aim of Levothyroxine is to increase the dose slowly. Retesting 6-8 weeks after each dose increase. Dose goes up in 25mcg steps until TSH is under 2 (many need TSH significantly under one) and most important is that FT4 in top third of range and FT3 at least half way in range

All four vitamins need to be regularly tested and frequently need supplementing to maintain optimal levels

NHS guidelines on Levothyroxine including that most patients eventually need somewhere between 100mcg and 200mcg Levothyroxine.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to saadi26

Vitamin D at least over 75nmol

B12 over 500

Folate over 10

Ferritin at least half way in range

Both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies need testing

Yes I’ve already given blood for testing

So here goes:

FreeT4 0.87 ng/dl ref range 0.89-1.76

TSH 4.456 uIU/ml ref 0.55-4.78

Free T3 2.5 pg/ml ref range 2.3-4.2

Ferritin 155ng/ml ref range 5-148

So T4 is low and ferritin

Shows either hypothyroidism (but possibly not bad enough to be treated in the UK), or undermedication - TSH too high and both thyroid hormones low (should both be at least half way through range = 1.325/3.25). High ferritin could be the result of inflammation, but high iron is dangerous so you should get your doctor to look at why it is high
