I don't know about "exactly" but it is described as a sex hormone and is needed for egg and sperm production.
It stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs by making the egg follicles grow. It is produced by the pituitary. If you think of it like TSH, it's FT4 and FT3 are oestrogen and progesterone (sort of). High FSH, like high TSH, means the other hormones aren't doing what they should so ovaries aren't responding, and you are probably menopausal. Very oversimplified. but that's the gist of it.
