Thoughts on Tirosint: Hello all! Looking to get... - Thyroid UK
Thoughts on Tirosint
I wad diagnosed with hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) 15 months ago have been on tirosint from the start. I have never taken any sort of pill for of levothyroxine. I have never had a problem with tirosint. I live in Italy and I believe it is the routine prescription here, less absorption problems and no fillers etc. looking at research, it seems it is less likely to be affected by your morning tea or coffee. I think it has the same reactions with other meds as pill forms of levo..
Rwor,
If you're wondering why you've had so little response to your question, it's probably because at least 80% of our members reside in the UK. (see our current poll healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...
And sadly, Tirosint is not available on prescription here in the UK. We really wish it was!
That’s interesting because other people on here have said they get it in the UK. I’m in the US and you actually have to ask for it to get it. I have to be gluten-free and that’s one of the reasons why I am on it. I never did really well with the other kind which has filler and other things in it that I do not like.
It may be that some UK members buy it themselves from overseas, or may get it on private prescription, which they would also have to pay for. But it's not a UK licensed thyroid medication obtainable on our NHS. All UK thyroid medicines are gluten free, so that's not a reason for us to get Tirosint here.
Many members here would love the chance to try Tirosint, but as we would have to pay for it ourselves, the cost makes it prohibitive
I take Tirosint. It works well for me and I experience no side effects (as I did on other Levo brand). I find it to be absorbed very well.
It works if you have problems with fillers. However, there really needs to be a Tirosint equivalent of T3. If you are taking T3 and having problems with the fillers, it's just going to defeat the purpose. There's a new liquid suspension for Tirosint SOL that is just liquid, no pill. Frankly I just find it too expensive and have shifted to TR Man thyroid.
My Endocrinologist thought I had developed absorption problems following years of being solely on Synthroid. She suggested Tirosint. I abruptly changed.
On the plus side my mood improved dramatically, my carpal tunnel vanished, & my thyroid labs improved.
On the down side it felt like my body might have had adjustment problems changing medication so suddenly like that. I developed marked fatigue. I think this is because of weight loss. I lost weight on Tirosint.
Additionally I developed dark shallows under my eyes. The Endocrinologist thought this was noticeable because of my weight loss.
This weight loss with fatigue scared me so & restarted Synthroid. My prior weight returned promptly & I regained my energy. Now I take some of each together daily (under Endocrinologist direction) in hopes of better absorption & maintaining a steady weight.
It is hard to know if this is the entire picture because my lymphocyte count dropped too. My Internist thought I had a infection. This count was fine a few months later.
I have gathered from reading this forum that taking two brands like this is not recommended, but I haven’t yet come up with plan B.
I was diagnosed 23 years ago ( had it far longer) and was on Synthroid only until 4 years ago. Never felt completely well during that time. In 2015 T3 was added but then had issues with over range RT3 and FT4 also. Went T3 only for 2 years. Since January of this year I am on combo of Tirosint and T3. My dose is 75 mcg Tirosint and 25 mcg T3. I have no complaints on the Tirosint. I believe it to be far superior to Synthroid for sure. I take both about 3/4 a.m. daily
This article by an Italian doctor decries the incredible fixation on T4 only. He, himself, has hypothyroidism. antiaging-systems.com/artic...
I am very unwell still after 5 years on Levothyroxine. I’m living a half life, something I’ve heard many people saying here. Where can we get this armour/pigs thyroid? And woulda doctor oversee it or is it more than their job is worth?
I'm in the U.S. I understand that in the UK, any of the NDT (natural dessicated thyroid) products are not approved as medicines. You can, however, order such products over the Internet. If you can find a doctor in the U.K. willing to work with you, he or she can get the lab tests necessary to monitor your levels. If not, you can get testing done on your own and make adjustments when you see the results. In the U.S. NDT products are available on prescription, but again you have to find a doctor willing to work with you.
Everybody is different. I took it with all the hope and faith you can imagine. For sure, it helped my memory but I gained a lot of weight even being on a calorie restrictive diet as per doctor's recommendation. My tsh went from normal low to abnormal high. It did not work for me.. The doctor swears that it is wonderful and he thought I just did not take anything. Looking for another doctor.
