Lack Of Thyroid Hormone Causes Palpitations?

Hello,

I tried to search for this but couldn't find any satisfactory results. I am posting to just confirm that I am not going crazy, but it seems to me that after about 8-10 hours after my morning dose of thyroid hormone I get palpitations and they seem to be fixed by taking another dose in the evening, thus far.

This was not necessary on higher doses of Levo, but it occurred on lower doses of Levo (stopped Levo because it was not helpful in most areas of my health). Since changing to Thyrogold (which was great for three weeks then things changed again), I'm getting palpitations again and they can only go away by taking an evening dose of Thyrogold.

Has anyone experienced this or am I making correlations with things that are not related?

I can't verify you are not going crazy ( :-) ) but insufficient thyroid hormone can cause palpitations.

(My suspicion is that a bit too little thyroid hormone is more commonly a cause than a bit too much. Though if you are significantly over-dosed, then they do occur for that reason. But as always, we are all individuals with our own responses.)

I always notice palpitations when I'm under medicated. I have to be very near the top of the FT3 and FT4 ranges before I notice the palpitations subside.

Thanks for sharing. Good to know indeed.

Yes I get palpitations when next dose is overdue - for instance if I oversleep morning dose time I wake with palpitations a little while later. I’m optimal.

Yes, I've made the same connection. Still, it's a good idea to keep an eye on BP and basal temperature when it happens, just in case you're slightly over-replaced. I get palpitations in both circumstances.

I get phases of this. I take Levo and T3. Just occasionally I need to take extra T3 for a few days and then it settles down again. If the palpitations don’t stop with extra meds it would be best to get it checked out.

They certainly stop after taking more meds. It is when I think it has stabilized and take a bit less that they return.

I get them on Levo.

I get occasional palpitations, and had one episode of an irregular heartbeat, where I could actually feel my pulse going something like, "Thump, thump, THUMP! thump, THUMP!" Every other beat or so there would be an extra strong one. In spite of increases in thyroxine I am still slightly undermedicated (that's another story!) I don't think they cause any damage, but must put a strain on the heart long term.

Me too. I was taking 150mg of Levo and it made little difference to my thyroid hormone levels so I am trying ThyroGold and T3 (25mcg) to see if that changes anything.

Hi, perhaps it's worth talking to the dr and asking for some beta blockers for the palpitations ? I have them and I take 3 x 40mg propranolol daily and it stops it altogether x

Hmmm... I would like to sort out the cause first before using anything. However, I didn’t know about this so I will keep it in mind. Thank you.

I also get palpitations, at all times but also after food or drink. Has anyone experienced that?

Yes!!! I have experienced them after meals. It used to happen before I started taking thyroid medication. That stopped after I began medicating.

Digesting is hard work when your body is short of energy. Maybe that's why?

I have no idea.

When one eats the blood flow increases to digest food which if ones prone to this it can happen.
