T3 and Exercise Advice pls

Although I have fatigue and muscle weakness i am trying to exercise and be more active. I’m going to the gym and find weights easier than cardio.

This is great progress compared to where I have been, but after exercise it takes quite a few days to recover. Do you burn more T3 when exercising?

Should I increase my T3 to allow for exercising, if so by how much? I take quite a few supplements but would magnesium help me build muscle strength and recover better, if so can anyone recommend a good brand and daily dose?

Any other advise re: exercising/gym/weight training would be appreciated by anyone whose exercising regularly please thank you

MissFG,

Exercise is fab. It stimulates thyroid hormone secretion & improves tissue sensitivity , stimulates protein synthesis resulting in longer leaner muscle growth, etc, etc but if you have .. [ fatigue and muscle weakness ] ... you are evidently still recovering.

The longer we are left undiagnosed with inadequate amounts of thyroid hormone to achieve full well-being, the more destruction is caused and the longer the recovery stage and yes, exercise uses up T3, so if all the other metabolic systems and mechanisms haven't righted themselves yet, you will have no endurance.

How long have you been medicating T3 ? Are your iron and nutrient levels optimal ? If you have Hashi, are you managing it ? Have you considered possible tired adrenal glands worn out through supporting low thyroid hormone and may be requiring extra support to keep up with the metabolism boost given not only by T3, but exercise.

Some people on the forum have been known to take extra T3 before exercising. I wouldn't because all hormones work together and need to balance, and T3 has influence on rather more than just giving you a metabolism boost, so you could find other hormones out of synch in a few months time. You have had great progress so just need to listen to your body and go with what feels right at this moment in time.

I have always mountain-biked and practiced yoga. The yoga helped with my recovery hugely and still now takes precedence over too much cardio stuff. I think once our adrenals have been so compromised, we sometimes have to reevaluate our lives and what our bodies are capable of achieving in a positive way.

Thanks for your reply radd

I was very sick when diagnosed and my thyroiditis causing rare focal myosotis in my adductor muscles so I have muscle weakness and wastage on my inner thighs and bursitis in several joints including my hips.

I tried yoga and am going to start again as it helps stretch out my body but I struggle and shake a lot which I struggle with in the class and it upsets me. Cardio is the same but I use a bike to warm up and treadmill after weight training.

If I listened to my body I’d still be in bed. So I have to push myself as I know exercise along with a clean diet helps me.

I’ve been on T3 only coming up to 2 years. I’ve improved greatly and my thyroiditis has stopped being so active last summer, so 2 1/2 years since my full blown attack. Yes I probably do have issues with my adrenals but I think this will again improve in time and getting medical help for this is proving difficult as I’m self medicating.

I take all the necessary supplements I need. My physio understands and can feel my muscles shaking but says it’s not neurological so we think it’s the long lasting after effects of the myosotis. I’m back at my rheumy in July so will discuss these issues and see what they suggest.

I meditate a lot and try to be as active as I can besides the gym gardening cleaning etc but my body feels like it’s just resisting

MissFG,

Oh, poor you.

I hadn't heard of rare focal myosotis and had to google it. I hope it improves for you over time.

I also take T3 only and trying to get back on track with exercise i have the mental power to do it but its the body that keeps saying no you cant do it...its such a battle to get back to being "normal" or our normal. I take 35 mg T3 thinking of increasing this to 40 but i have low body weight so a big hesitant at the moment as i try to increase my weight. But i think the main exercise is the basics so walking etc. You arent alone when it comes to thinking about it you look young to so i get the frustration im only 26.

Edit Also side note you should look into blue blocking glasses they help reduce the blue light from us looking at screens all damn day. :)
