Last summer just after my holiday (beach - lots of Sun) my 'tell' indicated that my dose of Levothyroxine was too high. My 'tell' is that if these levels rise too high I get onycholisis - lifting of the fingernail from the nailbed - lifts outside top edge of little finger, then ring, then middle. (No, this is definitely not a fungal infection, yes it gets better if I reduce my levothyroxine). Well, the same thing has happened after this year's sunny holiday and has lead me to wonder if an increase in Vitamin D causes me to convert my T4 better? I've never seen it said anywhere but possibly I need a lower dose in Summer than Winter depending on my Vit D levels? Has anyone else experienced this?

It's really odd that you should mention that! I too have finger nails that threaten to detach from the nail bed at the tips. I have no idea at all why this should occur and as you say this comes and goes. At the moment they are fine but only last week my little finger and ring finger on my right hand were showing signs of separating from the nail bed. I take 2000 i.U. of vitamin D every day all year round and am only on 75 mcg levothyroxine. It's not a fungal infection in my case either. My GP did blood tests but couldn't find any reason for it. Guess it's just one of the mysteries of life!!

You seem to have a good idea what causes it for you. In my case I am still in the dark as I suspect I am in need of an increase in Levothyroxine rather than a reduction - next blood test due on Monday. l will let you know if I am wrong and I am in fact overmedicated. It would certainly be great to know what's causing it!

Best wishes

Caroline

Do you regularly test vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin levels?

Many, many hypothyroid patients, especially with Hashimoto's, need to supplement some, or all of these virtually continuously to maintain optimal vitamin levels

What vitamin supplements do you currently take?
