So for the past few months now I've been taking 9 x 25 mcg T3 per day and not showing any signs of being over medicated. I had been taking all the relevant suppliments too but clearly have a problem with the uptake. Anyway a week ago my pill nox which I'd organised the suppliments into ran out and I was lazy and only took the vitamin D & magnesium. Instead of 2 x 5000(can't remember the measure) tablets I've been taking whatever I poured our (say 6-10 tablets). For the past few says I started to feel a bit over medicated but today my heart is pounding out of my chest even after taking a 40mg propanalol.. I have just come back off holiday and noticed I was waking up refreshed and wondered if it was the sun (it certainly wasn't the alcohol lol).
Has anyone else found that really high doses of vitamin d help?

General advice given to get your thyroid to work better is to test Vit D, B12, folate and ferritin. We are often low in nutrients, side effect of having a thyroid condition and so it's recommended if you get these levels optimal, not just in range then your thyroid will work better. Did you have a test to show your Vit D level was low?
Testing should be done to see where you are vefore supplementing as too much isn't always a good idea either. I think this is what he have found out is that your body needed more Vit D though may be not as much but it has helped your thyroid improve so you now need to reduce your thyroid medication but I think you have found out the hardware that things need to be done slowly and also checked out first. Since I have improved my 4 suggested I've reduced my medication as well but you need to get the balance right on both sides. Plus a sunny holiday will have boosted as well.
Taking Vit D itsalso important to take the co factors as well Magnesium and K2.
Taking Vit D also increases calcium levels in the blood so more open to gall and kidney stones. The K2 takes the calcium out of the blood and puts it into the teeth and bone and the Magnesium locks it in.
If you take any form of blood thinner then talk to your GO before doing this as it could cause real problems
Thank you.. Yes I had all my vitamin levels checked by medkchecks and my cot D came back at about 30 which is at the bottom of the 'normal' range. I was, up to a week ago, taking 2 x 5000 cot d and magnesium but had never even heard of k2!
I have reduced my T3 dose and will see how I get on.
I finally have an appointment with a thyroid specialising endo next week. I am hoping they will tear everything again for me as I can't afford to keep paying for private bloods.
Hi there, please be careful with high doses of Vitamin D - it really can lay down in the arteries as calcium. My brother in law has just had a triple heart by pass due to high calcium levels in his blood and his arteries were completely clogged - he took for many years Cod Liver oil and I am convinced this has caused his problem. I was told by a renal specialist whilst in hospital for a kidney issue - in fact I was in a renal ward at a London Hospital - watch it when taking D as it can cause you calcium issues as I produce stones anyway - I know they say take magnesium and K etc but I am a firm believer in only taking D if you are deficient - and I am someone who was taking VERY high does a few years back as I was so deficient but it made me feel so ill - I have now got my levels up by smaller doses. The liver and kidneys can't take it.
silverfox7 wrote a great reply, covering some of what I was thinking. I take Metoprolol 50mgs twice daily myself and today my heart is going as you described. Mine was prescribed for atrial flutter, a heart conduction anomaly that’s linked with strokes. I’m new here due to recent blood tests showing I’m starting to match with my sister who has Hashimoto’s. Regarding the extra Vit D, I was tipped off years ago by a friend with fibromyalgia to take 1000mgs of it daily for musculoskeletal pain and that it can take up to 3 months to take effect. For me it was 6 weeks and the improvement was significant. I take K2 with it. If you or anyone here suffers that type of pain, it’s worth trying. However as has just been pointed out, be careful with Vit. D. Our family has varied levels of joint hypermobility and I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Hashimoto’s, heart conduction abnormalities, Vit D and magnesium deficiency are just a few of its co-morbidities. If you have a deviated septum, crowded teeth and partial syndactyly (slight skin webbing between 2nd and 3rd toes) or ever had chronic fatigue syndrome or asthma, then it’s possible that there’s an extra part of your health journey to explore. Many doctors are taught that it’s rare and that you have to have stretchy skin and joints that dislocate frequently. Not so, especially if you have tendon or ligament tears and early diffuse osteoarthritis. This may not be relevant for you but I’m sharing details just in case.
Londinium, you're right. I actually had no idea. This link doesn't show any vitamin D tablets, but I opened up both iHerb (useful site for importing US supplements) and Amazon, and a quick search brought up loads of these high strength tablets!
I take 3,000iu a day myself, and when I first started doing it several years ago I found it very hard to find these high strength tablets, but maybe either things have changed OR I was terrible at searching in the past
