Have come off Armour and moved over to Levo plus T3 ... hair falling out ... tired etc

furcoatnoknickers profile image

Hello all, After giving Armour a good try (only 3/4 good days a week) and antibodies higher than ever I’ve moved back to Levo and T3. Im not a good converter.

I think I’m making a mess of how much to take as my hair is falling out and I need to wee all the time. Like every hour!

I’m tired. Really tired.

I was on 1 and three quarter grains - sometimes two grains of Armour. (I never quite got the magic dose.)

Anyway, I’m now taking 75 Levo and 10 mcg T3.

Pushed up T4 to 100 but then looked 5 months pregnant. 😳

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

You need to wait a minimum of 6-8 weeks on current dose and then get FULL Thyroid and vitamin testing

Do you take T3 as 2 x 5mcg split dose 8-12 hours apart

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

If/when also on T3, make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Medichecks currently have an offer on until end of May - 20% off

Are you on strictly gluten free diet?

What supplements do you currently take?

Rereading your post. I was all of a dither yesterday.

Yes, I am gluten free. Vegetarian. Cleanish diet.

I take Vit D

B12

B1

B2

B6

Iron

Vit C

Magnesium

Just ref the T3 dosing, I’m taking the split dose 4 hours apart. Wondering if this is an error - should this be further apart? It can keep me awake.

As always very grateful for your advice. 😊

SlowDragon,

Many thanks for your speedy response and advice. I will indeed retest everything you’ve advised in 6 weeks.

Forgot to mention - All vits optimal. I just wanted to check that I wasn’t completely out with my calculation going from one to the other.

Six years down the road and still bumpy! 😒

You're welcome to share vitamin results in the forum if you want advice on them. Supplementing is no guarantee levels are good.

I clicked back to your most recent post on NDT, and looks like you might be in a puzzling situation. You had bloods there that looked really good, but still had symptoms.

In that post you mentioned you reduced down to 1 grain and felt better, but obviously that didn't turn out to be the solution or you wouldn't be here trying something else.

Your current dose is a lot higher than 1 grain, which off the top of my head would be 38mcg of T4 and 9mcg of T3.

I think in a situation like this where you're struggling to find your sweet spot it's a good idea to be very very systematic. My advice would be to start out on a dose you know is too low for you, and then very slowly raise. On NDT that's a tiny bit easier, because you dont have the extra complexity of having to worry about the ratio of T4 to T3 as well.

Really go deeply into vitamins and make sure they're optimal, too, because that will make the thyroid hormone work better.

I'd also take the best notes and data you can, temp, pulse, blood pressure, symptom notes, etc, so you can compare really well how well you've been on each dose.

Once you're on a dose that might be your true dose, you want to make sure you're giving it plenty of time to get stable and see how it suits you, so maybe you should stay longer than the standard 6 weeks, and do more like 8 weeks plus on each one. This means it might take you a year or so to try the full range of doses, but means you don't risk missing your sweet spot.

Very good advice. I need to start from scratch (again) with everything.

Last year I had increased NDT to 1 and a quarter grain - felt ok ... a little tired, a little weight gain - got a call from endo asking me if I was taking my meds as TSH had gone to 26. I retested after another increase and TSH WAS still at a miserable 24. I pushed the meds up again and haven’t felt right since.

My last blood draw showed overmedicated. A suppressed TSH and a lecture from endo.

I have questioned my Armour. As the company were low on stock I bought 1 and a half grains that I cut. I have wondered if it was dodgy batch!

It’s all given me a fright which is why I’ve sharply gone back to T4 &T3.

I’ve had a return of cancer twice in the last year. Spreading melanoma.

So many CT scans - surgery. Possibly putting me under attack. Was also under a huge strain with a deadline for a book I was writing.

I think unknowingly I’ve been letting things slip as a week ago a hump appeared between my shoulder blade and neck. I didn’t like what google said so I’ve buried my head 😬 ... cushings? Inflammation? You know when you think to yourself I can’t deal with anymore right now? So I bought high strength CBD and hump has improved/gone down a little.

I go on a much needed holiday in 2 days time. When I’m back I will be more systematic. I will retest everything. Vits too as I’ve realised that they haven’t been tested for a year. I’m just presuming they are optimal.

I will keep the thyroid meds on the lowish side and think I need to go back to a functional Dr. It’s getting messy and confusing.

Thank you so much from a teary eyed Caroline.

Sorry to hear you're teary eyed, you've been through such a lot, it must be overwhelming!

I definitely understand letting things slip.

The reason I recommend starting low is because it's easier to just keep rising than it is to wonder about whether you need to rise or reduce!
