Abnormal T4 and TSH, increased Levothyroxine & Pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I have just received some blood test results and wanted to know what you thought.

A year ago, an endo told me that the day I discover that I am pregnant, I should increase my own dosage by 25% and ask my GP to book an appointment with him.

It has now been almost 7 weeks since my last period and have increased my normal dose from 175mg to what is meant to be 218.75 for teh past 12 days(after postitive pregnancy test).

As I only have levo in 25s, 50s and 100s, I have been alternating over four days: day 1 at 200mcg followed by three days at 225mcg, to average out on 218.75.

I had a blood test yesterday, before taking my levo (around 11am) and here are my results:

TSH 0.03mu/L (0.27-4.2)

Free T4 26.2 pmol/L (12-22)

Free T3 5.5pmol/L (3.2-6.8)

I am now worried as my Free T4 is above normal. Is this way too high? Shall I reduce to 200mcg a day?

I haven't heard anything back from the endo nor the GP, although it has been a week now.

Could you please tell me your thoughts?

Thank you very much,

Joanna

Are you sure you were told 25% and not 25mcg?

Hi, I checked with GP on the notes from Endo and it was 25%, same as I had written down at the time too. Unless the endo got it wrong at the time. Do you think I should cut down to 200mcg for now?

With an over range FT4, personally I would reduce the Levo to 200mcg.

Thank you Seaside Susie. When do you think I should I ask my GP for a thyroid panel retest to see differences? I hope this hasn't done any harm...

After a dose change it's said to wait 6 weeks but pregnancy and hypo isn't my "thing", so you really need to get some solid advice from someone who knows about this. As it was your endo who originally told you to increase by 25% then I would get an urgent message to him and explain what has happened and ask for guidance.

Thanks so much for your message SeasideSusie, I did exactly that this morning following your advice. He just rang back and said to go back on my initial dose of thyroxine (175mcg) as it's a "little" too high...and said he would drop a note to the Berkshire antenatal thyroid clinic since I haven't heard back from them yet. Thanks :)

Hi, thank you. I take Weleda's magnesium phosphoricum d6, which my French GP has been prescribing to me for ages. It's a homoeopathic magnesium supplement. My prenatal vits are from raw foods (currently using the Vitamin Code brand). I am not sure how much Vit C they contain though. Thanks for reminding me about nutritional yeast, I have some at home, but have never really taken it properly. Will do so!

I have just ordered some raw garden of life vit C spray to have as well as as fruit. Thank you!
