I recently found out about my Hashimo problem and i am new to all these symptoms and learning to know my body well. I feel like recently if i do not eat for 4vhours my glycemia value goes down very easy. Yes is true, i do not eat a lot through a day, because i do not have such a big appetite. But i wanted to know did anybody experince the hypoglicemia more accentuated with Hashimoto? I just started taking Eutyrox 3 days ago so I am sure i will take som time before i am seeing the good results.

Hi Oanav. I’m assuming Eutyrox is Euthyrox brand of Levothyroxine T4 and that your hypoglycaemia are being measured by a blood glucose meter. That suggests that you have either pre-diabetes or a type of diabetes and also that you are hypothyroid.

I was diagnosed with both Type 2 diabetes and low thyroid (hypothyroidism) at the same time (so from the same blood sample). Low thyroid is more common in women than men (I’m a bloke).

A year after diagnosis, my low thyroid was being treated properly, I had lost some weight (13 stone down to 11 stone), was taken off any diabetes medicine (I was on Metformin) and I was eating healthily (I was before) but had learned portion control (not a natural trait in blokes)....

There is a correlation between the two in that if you are low thyroid you have a increased chance of becoming diabetic and vice versa. No one has proved a theory as to why but they are both endocrine conditions....

Type 2 diabetes is when the body becomes insulin resistant so you need more insulin for the same effect. It may be because of the liver failing to tell the pancreas to stop producing insulin.

Although our thyroid T4 is produced naturally in the butterfly thyroid gland in our throats, some of the T4 is converted to T3 in the liver, kidneys and muscles. Levothyroxine is T4, the inactive form and this is converted to T3 when needed (the active firm)

So yes Hashimotos and other low thyroid conditions can be related to low blood glucose levels! And both endocrine conditions may be liver related..

Yes, hypoglycemia can be caused by being hypothyroid. I used to get it all the time when I was more ill, and I today I still get dizzy and lightheaded if I don't keep to my usual schedule of meals.

It doesn't have to have anything to do with diabetes, although being hypothyroid does make us more vulnerable to developing diabetes.

I always try to read about this, but often there are tiny snippets in other research. I suspect the hypoglycemia is caused by the body struggling to release sugar from storage so that we can use it for energy. This matches how I tend to feel - like I am dependent on the food I eat, and my body is not using the stores to even things out.
