Alltrials have sent us their latest Press Release where they are searching for Ask for Evidence Champions. Thyroid UK believes you should always ask for evidence about health treatments so we fully back this campaign:

National evidence champions sought: Members of the public can become Ask for Evidence Ambassadors and hold the powerful to account

• UK charity Sense about Science is recruiting 20 members of the public to join its national Ask for Evidence campaign

• Ambassadors will encourage communities around the UK to seek out the evidence on issues they care about

• Successful applicants will receive expert training in public speaking

We hear daily claims about all manner of topics, from ‘wonder’ diets, to new energy technology, to the dangers of social media. But how do we know if these claims are true?

Sense about Science is recruiting 20 members of the public to become ambassadors of evidence, as part of its national Ask for Evidence campaign. The campaign hopes to inspire the public to hold powerful figures, companies, organisations and public bodies to account. The volunteers will help people request for themselves the evidence behind news stories, marketing claims and policies

Ask for Evidence Ambassadors will encourage others to look for the truth behind the claims, by giving talks, running activities and talking with community groups in their region about issues that matter to them.

The 10 existing ambassadors have already reached over 50,000 people and the campaign has seen more than 1500 people ‘ask for evidence’. Sense about Science is now aiming to build on this success with ambassadors from across the country, and all walks of life, highlighting why evidence matters to them.

Successful applicants will receive expert training in public speaking, insights into campaigning and communication and opportunities to organise and deliver talks.

This position is open to anyone who cares about, uses or advocates for evidence in their lives and communities.

Applicants will need to be available to attend a training day in London on Friday, May 10. Travel expenses will be covered.

Applicants are asked to send a short CV and a note explaining why they want to be an ambassador and what issues matter to them most to Alex Clegg – alex@senseaboutscience.org.

Applications close at 5pm, Friday March 22.

Supporting Quotes

Alex Clegg, Campaigns and Communications Coordinator at Sense about Science, said: “Do you care about evidence and want to hold the powerful to account? Then we want to hear from you.

“Whether it’s claims about windfarms, healthcare, or road speed limits and everything in between, we want to encourage people to ask for the evidence about the issues that matter most in your community. This is a great chance to shape a national campaign, and we’d love to hear from you.”

I think this is a great project for Thyroid UK to be supporting. On the subject of asking for evidence I have commented on the ‘interpretation of thyroid tests’ section on the website. It is a bit confusing in my opinion. An alternative approach to diagnosis of hypothyroidism is suggested. I don’t think there was a link to a citation or anything for this approach.. ... the Charity commission recently published guidelines on CAM and advocated the provision of evidence to back approaches to diagnosis and treatment, so I would think this is worth considering and if you can add any it would be helpful. Best wishes.

Thanks Pinkcoral, We are in the process of redesigning our website with lots of new articles and pages with references. It's taking us a long time to finish due to the T3 Campaign and GDPR but we are getting there!

If this was two years ago, hopefully things have changed as I have a good relationship with them now. We need to rebut any comments about NDT. There's plenty of older evidence and some new now showing that it's helpful for some patients. Dr Heald is trying to get a study off the ground too. More research is definitely needed into NDT.
