Switching from NDT to T3

Hello, so I'm eating a plant based diet and not feeling like I want to consume any part of a pig anymore. However, with my hashimotos, I've found that NDT was the most effective. This could be psychological, thinking that having T1,2,3 &4 is better than only having T3 or T3 and T4.

I wasn't well on levothyroxine only and felt more susceptible to infections, particularly respiratory infections.

I've been on NDT only for one week as if you see my previous post, I tried going without thyroid mediation and when I was tested my TSH was 14.4 and no I did not feel well.

So I'm wondering if I should be T3 only and I can only manage 6mcg at a time to avoid headaches. Or perhaps 25mcg levothyroxine added might help as my T4 is low.

Thanks

It is highly unlikely that NDT contains T1 or T2. The thyroid produces only miniscule amounts of these two - it at all. T2 and T1 come from conversion of T4 to T3 and rT3, then T2, then T1. And, as far as we know, T2 and T1 don't actually do anything, they are just part of the process of recycling iodine. So, that is not a good reason for taking NDT. :)

A lot of people do better on NDT, but we don't really know why. But NDT doesn't suit everyone. Some people are better on synthetics. You have to experiment to find what is best for you as an individual.

The best way to start deciding what to try is to look at your blood test results. But you need full testing: TSH, FT4, FT3. So, if you were to post those on here, people would be better able to help you in that decision.

Not sure what you mean, here. Do you mean you have to split your dose and not take too much at one time? Or do you mean you cannot increase your dose of T3 higher than 6.25 mcg?

Thank you , yes I mean 6mcg is the maximum dose at any time as I’ve had headaches lasting two days from taking a 12mcg dose. However I’m sure I can tirate up. Yes I can see that testing would be useful, but I might wait a bit as although the last test was just TSH and T4 , it was less than two weeks ago. My T4 was 5.3 (12-22) TSH 14.22 (0.27-4.2)

Hi have just read of a post by Galathea who needs a prescription from an endocrinologist

for the right medication. Slowdragon administrator has given her information to email Dionne@thyroid.uk tukadmin@thyroiduk.org. She is wanting a prescription for compounded t3 in olive oil by Receptura Germany. May be you could pm her for information with links to find an endocrinologist who can give you a prescription for your particular problem.
