Can someone recommend articles about T3? I source and pay for my own T3 but surgery refused to write out prescription for German pharmacy.

Hi,

Have previously done battle with my GP surgery and was refused a trial of thyroxine (and B12 injections prior to that). Seeing endo privately, prescribed thyroxine and T3 but wanted my prescriptions to go back to primary care. I want to avoid regular trips to consultant and consultation fees as I'm barely working.

I explained to my GP surgery that I would continue to pay for the T3 from Bennewitz. All that I needed them to do was approve my request for repeat prescriptions from them. They have refused, citing that they were not the ones to prescribe the medication. I explained that they were not the ones to prescribe thyroxine, but they were happy to approve a repeat prescription for that.

They also have on my file, if the GP checked, that I am homozygous for the DIO2 gene, so I need T3 as I am a poor converter of thyroxine. I stupidly thought that my request would just be a formality. I'm not going to cost the NHS a penny and would even continue to monitor my thyroid levels through private blood tests.

The receptionist who relayed the outcome told me that I can write in to the practice manager and set out my concerns and request again. I checked with the secretary of my endo and he would be happy to continue writing out prescriptions but of course I would still need to be monitored by him, which would still entail trips to London.

Does anyone have to hand some good references about T3, DIO2 gene, breathing problems or anything else relevant? I will refer to the GMC's Good Medical Practice, and how they are not abiding by those principles throughout my care. They have done nothing to help me.

Any further advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Why not explain the matter to your endo. See whether there is any flexibility in the way they work. Perhaps he/she would be content with receiving blood tests twice per year and monitoring you online? It’s becoming more common for medics to consult by phone/Skype....But, this is not a free service!

Thanks for your reply m7-cola,

It was good that he was happy to write a slightly different prescription for Thybon Henning T3 from Germany so hopefully he'll be happy to do this. Perhaps he might even write to the surgery on my behalf.

Yes, I think so. It would be a courteous and professional thing to do. My endo does this. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you and all the best to you too.

He's very good at updating my surgery. It's just frustrating that they wouldn't go against my first endo when he wanted to prescribe HRT but will in effect go against this one. T3 is such a controversial subject.

Too true. It’s an exhausting and draining task to get the medication we need.
