Results are fine

Hi all, my thyroid results have come back and everything is in range, now I know my TSH is at the higher end of the scale, and t4 at the lower end, but in the doctors eyes this is fine. I know this is a thyroid forum so it’s not really up to you guys to help me, but I’ve had numerous other tests and have been treated for low folate and vit D, still feeling no better and I’m now losing hope. What’s wrong with me. The only other thing I can think of is that I have been heavy on gluten throughout the 3 years that I have been feeling so run down. Now I’m not celiac but I have heard of non celiac gluten intolerance. Could it be worth trying to ease myself off of gluten? Could gluten intolerance be a cause of fatigue, brain fog, weakness, irritability etc.?

I'm not in favour of going gluten free 'on autopilot' but if you don't recover it's worth a try but ditch it if it doesn't work. Before that I would strongly urge you to persuade you doctor to increase your levothyroxine dose as your fT4 is too low. If they refuse you could try taking an extra 25 or 50 mcg for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Gluten free does make a difference in a small group of patients, it's not clear whether it really is the gluten or some of the sugars that are in bread etc. So, try optimising your thyroid hormone levels first then a trial of gluten free but be prepared to ditch either or both if they don't work.

Hi mate, I’m not on any form of thyroid treatment atm, the doctors tell me I’m fine and don’t need any treatment for anything apart from so called “anxiety”, so I’ve no way of trying levo. But I agree with you when it comes to gluten, and cutting things out like that should always be a last resort. But I’m clutching at straws now because I know somethings making me feel bad and it’s effecting my life negatively. Thanks for the reply

Sorry, misunderstood, thought you were on levothyroxine. If you haven't been tested I would check for diabetes just to rule it out. You could then try gluten free for a couple of months. It is possible you are hypothyroid even with 'normal' results but it will be very difficult to get a doctor to do a trial of thyroid hormone which is the only way to confirm one way or another.

I was tested (bloods) for lots of things, due to developing necrobiosis lipoidica. All 'normal', but I had been carb free for 6 weeks, so Celiac wouldn't show, anyway. I ate gluten on Christmas day and Oh, my! A night of severe abdominal pain, today joint pain and cold symptoms are fading. I won't be doing a gluten challenge or asking for re-testing: the best thing I can do is cut gluten.
