High Free T4

I’ve been taking Levothyroxine 50mcg for hypothyroid my latest results are

TSH 3.04

Free T4 15.2

I have been feeling very unwell shaking dizziness palpitations a friend said my free T4 is too high so I. could be hyperthyroid and taking too much medication I am going to make GP appt but they don’t seem to do an awful lot.

Any advice appreciated thank you

On your post of 12 hours ago the ranges for your results were requested - please post them as labs do vary. Read through your last post/replies where it was mentioned more than once that you are UNDERmedicated ... 😊

Ranges are the figures after the result.

Hi thank you for your reply I did write another post with the ranges as well

TSH 3.04 mU/L. (0.3-5.0)

Free T4 15.2 pmol/L. (7.9-16)

I think this is why a colleague said I may be taking too much as from these lab results my TSH in range but Free T4 on the higher side.

I’m really not sure though I’m going to make GP appt as I’m definitely not feeling right at all. Thank you very much for your reply.

Vit B12 is 137 ng/L (120-900)

I was having 3 monthly vit b12 injections but then stopped them as they said my iron stores were adequate for 2 years 😉

Your Iron stores have nothing to do with your B12. Do you have Pernicious Anaemia ? Testing B12 whilst having injections is not correct - as your results will be skewed. Your latest result proves you still do need those injections ...

Sorry did not have time to go back to previous post ! You are only over-medicated if the FT3 is over range or high - and that was not tested. T4 is a storage hormone and needs to convert into the Active hormone - T3.

You are not feeling good as your B12 is Low - not that your GP will think that - they are content when things are in range - but it is where you are in the range that is key. Read the book - Could it be B12 ? - by Sally Pacholok - or watch the film on YouTube - same name. She suggests 500 to prevent cognitive decline and neurological symptoms.

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

Scroll down in the above link to read the signs and symptoms of Low B12 - neurological ones come first.

I am sure your other results will also be low - Folate - Ferritin and VitD - are the key ones initially ...

Not sure what the GP can do apart from the tests for vitamins and minerals you will be requesting - also Thyroid anti-bodies TPO & Tg. Your symptoms could be due to Low B12 and the others. Have you ever been anaemic ? Did you have a Full Blood Count ?

Thank you for your reply

Yes I had a full blood count they were ok except cholesterol was high

I called my GP today the receptionist said they wouldn’t start me back on B12 until they got confirmation from the consultant. I asked why can’t the GP put me back on the B12 injections as it’s showing low she insisted they need to do another blood test first 😉 I may call and ask to speak to the practice manager as the consultant is away now for another week so the letter won’t get to my GP for a while yet.

The Full Blood Count is about Red and White blood cells - nothing to do with cholesterol. Which consultant are they waiting for to sanction your B12 ? When did you start quarterly injections and how long after stopping was the last test done ?

Hi

Yes I meant that my full blood count was ok as were my U&E but they also checked cholesterol that came back high. I’ve just had one of the doctors call me from the surgery and I’m seeing her on Thursday so hopefully will get somewhere. Thank you for all your help and advice.

Don't forget to ask for copies of ALL your results with ranges - so you can monitor your progress - and post more easily here. You are legally entitled to them. You didn't answer my questions above about the B12 ....

It was a neuro consultant that I was referred to for the dizziness and shakiness he asked about my B12 and why it was stopped. The GP didn’t really say anything about my thyroid or B12 just referred me to neuro. The B12 was stopped about 2 years ago when the level was 600 however I was having 3 monthly injections back then but it has obviously been dropping as it’s now 137

Shocking ... I posted a link for you about B12 above - did you look at it ? On that website there is also a Draft letter that could be left with your GP regarding your treatment ... Hope all goes well.

Thank you for your help I will ask for these

When vitamins are too low we can't use thyroid hormones

Getting extremely low B12 sorted is essential. And testing vitamin D, folate and ferritin as these are very likely too low as well

Poor conversion of FT4 to FT3 is common especially when vitamins are low. Then FT4 is high, but FT3 likely low, as shown by TSH being too high
