Hi guys as you know I have been suffering with weight again since diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have lot more other bad symptoms too but weight gain and no ability to loose with control calories and exercise 4 times a week is the worst one. Since I have been bothering my doctor to do something he prescribed me phentermine 37.5 once a day to kick start my metabolism. I need to know if anyone in the community has tried and was successful and kept the weight off. Much appreciated.

Are you sure you want to use this weight loss drug? You might want to check out these couple of links

Your problem has been outlined in responses to your previous post here

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Your ferritin result is dreadful, it's below range, and must be addressed and needs to be at least 70 for any thyroid hormone to work.

It was pointed out to you that Total T3 is not a useful test and Free T3 needs testing.

Free T3 is the active hormone and if this is low weight loss wont be possible.

Your Total T3 is very low in range so you're probably not making much Free T3.

Exactly what thyroid meds are you taking - Levo only or a combination of Levo and T3 as mentioned in a previous post of yours?

I think before you do anything these are the things to address immediately

* Discuss your below range ferritin with your doctor, get that sorted.

* Test Free T3 and if that is low in range you either need to add T3 to your Levo or increase your T3 dose depending on what you are currently taking.

You say you exercise 4 times per week. Exercise depletes T3, so if you are already low then you are making things worse. Just walking, swimming, yoga, for now.

that you have Hashimoto's and SlowDragon gave lots of useful advice and links to help there. Have you done anything about this?

Taking a weight loss drug that has the potential to increase cardiovascular side effects is not the answer, addressing the Hashi's, sorting out your dire ferritin, and finding out your FT3 levels are.

Also, a couple of other important warnings about the drug here: healthline.com/health/phent...

As it is a psychostimulant with amphetamine-like pharmacology, I'd definitely think twice about taking it even though my own weight gain has been horrific.

Phentermine will reduce your appetite. Are you sure you're eating too much? Eating less could cause problems like nutritional deficiencies. Are your nutrients optimal at the moment? Vit D, vit B12, folate, ferritin? If they're not, your body won't be able to use thyroid hormone correctly, and that will make you put on more weight. And, if you eat low-calorie, this will have an adverse effect on your conversion, making you more hypo, and putting on even more weight.

Seems to me like a pretty stupid thing to give a hypo. Over-eating is hardly likely to be the cause of their weight-gain. It's more likely to be a slow metabolism, and it might not even be due to excess fat. It could be water, and eating less won't affect that. Personally, I wouldn't take it.

Not what you're looking for?
