The latest guidance from the RMOC on prescribing liothyronine also states "The prescribing of unlicensed liothyronine and thyroid extract products is not supported." NDTs are not licensed for use in the UK and whilst that doesn't necessarily prevent GPs from prescribing it if they feel it is appropriate for the patient, in light of the RMOC standpoint, it is now less likely than it's ever been, that it will be prescribed on the NHS.

I know that thyroid extracts are a bit of a funny category (or at least they are here, prescription medications but somehow in a different category) - but is liothyronine in the same category?

It’s unfortunate - patients should have the choice to find the treatment that makes them well, but you probably have more chance of your GP prescribing you a unicorn, a trip to brigadoon and three opportunities to climb Rapunzel’s hair. Or T3 of course. 🤸🏿‍♀️

I’ve just paid £95 for NDT on private prescription my nhs endo wouldn’t prescribe but I’m going to ask again as I’m not sure I can sustain this amount. I’m wondering you could ask your endo anyway because I’ve read some posts that did get it on the nhs

Hi How long does the £95 last ?

how do you go about getting a private prescription?

thanks

3 months taking 1 a day, you need a private prescription from a private endo a consultation is around £200 upwards

I obtained a prescription from a functional medicine practitioner who was also a GP. This was a couple of years ago and I phoned Springfields as they seemed to be the cheapest.

Ouch! £95 for 90 tablets! That will get to be very expensive if you find you need to increase your dosage? 1 grain does seem to be a bit of a low dose? You can get 1,000 tablets for between £51 - £65 from Thailand. I will PM you the online link.

Absolutely essential to test vitamin levels FIRST

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested. Also extremely important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Do not take Levothyroxine dose in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take immediately after blood draw. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

(If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test )

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Email Dionne at Thyroid Uk for list of recommended thyroid specialists who will prescribe T3

please email Dionne
