I went for my post op yesterday, it’s now roughly 3 weeks since total thyroidectomy. The specialist told me they found a tumour ( cancerous) within the thyroid. I was so shocked I didn’t really hear much of what he said after that. He said a cancer support nurse will call me next week.
Has anyone else had this experience? I haven’t been told I need RAI.

I'm sorry to hear of your news. Thyroid cancer is now the 20th most common cancer in the UK, so you definitely aren't alone, and I'm sure someone will respond soon, who has been through the same as you. Speaking to someone informed, such as the nurse, will give you the opportunity to raise questions specific to you, such as which type of thyroid cancer was found, and therefore what post-surgical treatment will be offered to you. Best wishes.
Not everyone needs RAI, one step at a time. Find out what type of thyroid cancer and size of tumour first. It might be very small and indolent. Try not to worry about what you don't know. Generally thyroid cancer has a good outcome. I'm still here more than 10 years later.
Thank you for your reassurance and I’m so glad to hear you are ok. I must admit after he said that word I didn’t hear properly what else he said. When the c. support nurse calls I will make sure I have my list of questions ready.
