I’ve been trying to get pregnant , this time i’m expecting good news i hope , but when i did my tsh blood test it came with level of 9.5 . Is it possible to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy kids if i start medications from now , i guess if my pregnancy test came positive i might be now in my 3 weeks . I’m having my pregnancy blood test in couple days . I’m afraid if it’s too late for medics

Can you help me and tell me if it’s possible?

Thanks

Dokazz,

Welcome to our forum.

It is known that the need for thyroid hormone increases in the early part of pregnancy due to the increased oestrogen levels of early pregnancy. You will be your baby's only source of thyroid hormones as your baby's thyroid gland isn't fully functional until after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

If you don't have sufficient thyroid hormones, you are at an increased risk of miscarriage, and your baby is at increased risk of developmental problems.

Have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism ? Are you medicating thyroid hormone replacement ? Are you under medical care re trying to conceive ?

Yes I’m on thyroxine 25 mcg , and i’m under my doctor’s care for conceiving and he told me that i have a good chance for pregnancy this time , but my tsh is a surprise for me !! I’m so terrified that it can cause me problems while I’m in early weeks . Is it?

Dokazz,

You are right to be concerned.

Ask your doctor for an immediate dose increase. You may need more than one and should be tested between each. The aim is to keep TSH in a low-normal range (0.4–2.0 mU/L) and an FT4 concentration in the upper reference range.

If your GP is uncooperative, you could provide him with a copy of the NICE guidelines. You should also ask for a referral to a specialist.

See your GP tomorrow for immediate dose increase in Levothyroxine

TSH should be under 2 for TTC and pregnancy

You also need vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested too, these are often too low when hypothyroid

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested? If not, you need TPO and TG thyroid antibodies to see if cause of hypothyroidism is due to autoimmune thyroid disease

Hi Dokazz

Everyone else has great advice on this. Just wanted to chip in with what I did in a similar situation.

I had terrible pregnancy thyroid advice - like you. My GP told me to reduce my dose, not increase it by 30%. I increased my dose myself - I had read the NICE advice and knew the GP had advised me poorly - by taking an extra 50 / day. And when I ran out, told my GP that the midwives had told me to increase my dose. Somehow it worked.

Call your midwife / make first contact with the midwives and explain that your GP has got it wrong. See what they say. If in doubt, ask to see a consultant midwife and explain you are very worried. Tell them where your TSH is. I found that the hospital midwives were really helpful on this point.

But if you can get your GP onside immediately, so much the better.
