My TSH level

Okay it’s another Month now since I was here. My Endo called and said my TSH level came out to 5.23, which she said it’s a little hi but to come back in a Month for another TSH blood work. Well I’m still taking the bystolic of 2.5 once a day for high blood pressure and haven’t gotten no more headaches only a little bit of runny nose and some sneezing here and there. I am not taking any medication for Thyroid, last time I took any medication that was 5 months ago, and that was Methamizole. Been feeling okay just want to lose some weight which I’ve been 162 For I’d say like 11 months, does anyone think my weight issue is because of my TSH level?

Thanks!

Unexplained weight gain is the commonest question on the forum. It is also a clinical symptom of hypothyroidism.I would think a TSH of 5.23 would be near the top of the range (you haven't put any ranges) and would be diagnosed in some other countries but not the UK, where they've been instructed to only diagnose when the TSH reaches 10. This is ridiculous and means many people suffer due to the fact that TSH isn't yet high enough whilst ignoring symptoms. At one time in the past we were only diagnosed upon our symptoms (no blood tests then) and given a trial of natural dessicated thyroid hormones.. In the UK the 'professionals' have been told not to prescribe until the TSH is 10, which could take some time yet.

Always get a print-out of your blood results, with the ranges.

I note you've been a member for two years but there's no background on your Profile but note you have had Graves and and also hashimotos. The following is from TUK:

If you have thyroid antibodies in your blood you should be given thyroid hormone replacements.

email Dionne at Thyroiduk.org.uk who has an article in Pulse magazine written by Dr Toft, one of the top doctors re Hypothyroidism and he states that if antibodies are present we should be prescribed. Email for Dionne below:-

Thanks Shaws for responding. Well my results came into her office[TSH] and she called but would have to go pick up my results which I will ask for a print out. Yes I’ve asked her about her giving me medication when my Level is considered Hashimoto or hypo as she also calls it, but she said no since it could turn on me, and she means I could end up with Graves again, so she said hopefully on my next reading next month I’ll be normal..... I shall see about that, it thanks for sending me also information so I can read up on and learn what I need to learn and perhaps bring it up to my Endo. Thank you so much.

Hi Sara long time no hear!! I'm so sorry you are still stuck in a rutt, its not much fun that your doctor will not prescribe you anything for hypo, have you asked your doctor for a trail run of levothyroxine, do not know if its called anything different in Texas. Your gp does not sound very helpful at all....very much like mine too👎

I expect its still very hot there still, lucky you, 😀

Hi Rmichelle! Yes it’s still hot out here in Texas. Hope your doing fine. It’s kinda funny as I read up on another forum I’m with, and it’s so unknowledgeable on TSH levels and also on their T Free 3 and 4. They also do not know about medications, it sounds more like a defeated forum, I’m always coming here to read, and it’s certainly rich in knowledge concerning the Thyroid. Yes still dealing with this Endo, and she won’t budge on giving me anything when I go hypo. My cousins Endo have her Rai when she came down with Graves, didn’t give her a chance to see if maybe she would go into remission, even tho it was years ago with her, and she won’t take her pill, she’s making herself sick, she swears the medication she takes makes her sick she’s gone without for almost a year, then she goes back on it, she does this repeatedly it’s sad... I’ve been telling her how important it is to take her medication, she doesn’t know the severity it’s causing her body, I’ve told her about her reading up on it, but she complains her eyes and head hurt..... and how are you? Are you still taking your Thyroid medication? Any close sight of going into remission? Always in my prayers my friend.

I hope you get sorted sara as its a long fight anyway, yes I see my Endo on Tuesday but not hoping for miracles...I never do, I am still on 2.5 MG's every other day for last 8 weeks and it has taken long to kick in this time with lots of symptoms but finally I'm feeling better than I was , still got iron def anemia to sort out👍 I think Endo wants me on carbi until January at least but we will see. Aaw no tell your friend she is putting herself in danger of not taking her meds. Well it must be early morning there now Sara, are you kids at school or on vacation still? 😀👍

Not because of the TSH itself, no. But, a high TSH usually indicates a low FT3, and it's T3 that causes symptoms like weight-gain, when it is low. It is normal proceedure to retest after a month or two, because TSH can be raised due to other causes, like an infection. If your TSH is still as high, then hopefully your doctor with start treatment for hypothyroidism.

Patient-to-patient tip: make sure you have your blood draw as early in the morning as possible - at least before 9am - and fast over-night. TSH is highest early in the morning, and decreases throughout the day. It also decreases after eating. :)

I certainly will take this into consideration greygoose, thanks for informing me more with knowledgeable information that I need to learn on. I’m very, very thankful as I’ve learned the other forum I’m on from the State does not know as much as you and the others on here know, and I’m just very thankful and grateful to be a part of this forum. Have a great day ! I’ve stopped having them bad headaches with runny nose and bad sneezing, I was so discouraged because I thought I was going to get this Graves appearing with how I was feeling, but thank God I’ve been feeling much better than the last two months or was it three? With that.
