Weight loss

Hi since I’ve been on ndt (may 2018), I’ve lost 10lbs in weight which I didn’t need to lose. I know most people gain weight but I seem to have gone the other way. Has this happened to anyone else? I was wondering if it could be my adrenals as I still haven’t found my sweet spot. I’m still undermedicated as had to lower my dose. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Did you lower your dose, due to your blood test or due to symptoms you developed?

People don't usually gain weight on NDT - we can gain weight if dose is too low. They can also gain weight on levothyroxine if dose isn't optimal.

People can gain when undiagnosed hypothyroid (I didn't) or it is due to being on an insufficient dose which can then reduce as their thyroid hormone replacement is increased.

Hello it was due to symptoms. I’ve just increased back to 2 1/4 after recent blood work.

It would be easy just to take a pill and forget about why we take it, but it isn't if our symptoms still remain. I hope you feel better soon. I think it takes about six weeks till we are 'optimum' on our new dose.

As you have Hashimoto's are you regularly testing and supplementing to optimal, vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin

What about gluten free diet?

Been tested for coeliac disease first?

Some people struggle to maintain weight unless on exactly right dose

NDT doesn't suit everyone

Ever tried Levothyroxine plus small dose of T3?

No but I couldn’t tolerate thyroxine. Hopefully when on correct dose I’ll stop loosing.

Last year when I was taking 3 grains of NDT I was losing weight and my FT3 was high over range. I am now on 2.5 grains of NDT and my weight is now back to normal.

I lost a stone when I started levothyroxine in 2 weeks!!! I’ve levelled off now but can’t put weight on which is odd as everything I read says Autoimmune Hypothyroid generally gain weight 🤔 (I had gained before I was diagnosed) so have just assumed the thyroxine has speeded up my metabolism.....I also notice I’ve lost muscle tone :-( I’m afraid to go to the gym as I can’t afford to lose anymore weight!!!

Thanks for you’re reply. Yes I’ve lost muscle tone as well. I gained before diagnosis to and I’ve lost just under a stone I can’t put any weight on however much I eat!

I’m trying to eat lots of protein and have just started taking a product called Hydro-Zyme (advised by my Functional Medical Practitioner) as I have low stomach acid therefore not digesting and absorbing food properly..., do we’ll see what happens....!!
