Hi all, I’ve been on 100 mcg of T3 and been stable for some time now. Thought I’d cracked my hashimotos.
Anyway I’ve had sinusitis for 8 weeks and been feeling worse daily, resulting in constant doctors appointments, phone appointments emergency room visits and finally blood tests.
I’ve just received a phone call to say my TSH levels are over 100. And I need to start on 50 mcg T4 straight away. This horrified me until I realised how ill I have been on T3 only anyway this past 8 weeks so adding T4 can’t possibly be any worse? which means what? My recent T3 tablets have been fake?!? My body has resisted it? T3 is so cheap surely no one would go to the bother of faking it? Has anyone heard of this before. I don’t even resemble myself my face is so puffy my own child keeps saying ‘you’re not my mummy’ 😢

Possibly fake yes.. You shouldn’t need 100mcg of T3 a day should you in any case.. ? Sounds a huge amount.. I hope more knowledgeable people than me reply to you. Best wishes
I wonder if you got a new batch 8 weeks ago, and it was a fake batch. This happened to me 8 years ago. Like you, I had been on 100 mcg T3 which I got from a compounding pharmacy. I felt good, but my blood results always came back with a way high ft3 and a TSH so low it was barely detectable. But since I felt well, my doctor kept me on that regimen. Looking back, the ft3 was probably so over range because I always took my dose the morning of the test. This most likely gave a false high reading as I had no symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Anyway, one day I got my routine 6 month blood drawn, and my doctor called immediately upon receiving the results. My TSH went from 0.002 to 57! We deduced that it was from a bad batch of medicine. My doc switched me to 100 mcg Cytomel, and my numbers returned to “my normal”.
I’d say you definitely got a fake batch. Also, typically T3 is very expensive, so that should be another clue that you got a fake batch.
Sorry for such a long rep, but I hope it helps you!
Yes kellykitty was looking up my bank statement last night and I received the batch one week before I started to feel hypo symptoms and put it down to the cold weather!! I’ve nowhere else to purchase the T3 so I’ll have to go with the doctors and take the T4 unfortunately. Although part of me is quite keen to see how it works out as it will take the pressure off me trying to source the T3. My face has came down already so I must be absorbing the hormones already.
Good luck—I truly hope you do well on the T4. I’m in the US and it’s getting harder and harder to get the Cytomel. The manufacturer stopped making it for an unknown reason, and the pharmacies can’t get it. Fortunately my doctor started me on T4 75 mcg with 25 mcg of Cytomel. If I had to rely on the T3 only, I’d be in big trouble. So good luck—feel better soon!
