Hi everyone
Just thought I would share my story with you as I had a very positive experience and if it helps just one person that would be wonderful. I had a hemithyroidectomy a little over 3 weeks ago for an indeterminate nodule (i.e. they couldn't tell if it was cancer or not). To say I was nervous beforehand would be an understatement. I didn't sleep for weeks in the lead up to it, I had severe anxiety and couldn't concentrate on anything but the surgery and outcome of it - If i would even get through the surgery (it was my first general anaesthetic) how I would feel after, and the results etc. Well the surgery itself was really easy I had minimal pain after and was able to eat sandwiches and crisps! and drink straight after coming out of recovery. I was discharged the next day and took 2 weeks off work (that is recommended to avoid infection and allow your body to fully recover from surgery) The first few days were difficult to sleep because i sleep all over the place and couldn't find a comfortable position. But I propped myself up with pillows and it was OK after a few days. I only took pain relief for 4 days after that I didn't need anything. My scar now looks fantastic it is a thin red line which will eventually turn white and be barely noticeable (fingers crossed!) Yesterday I went for a follow up with my fantastic surgeon and I received the result that that it was benign, no cancer found. I am so relieved and grateful and now I am going to live life to the full and be more positive. The whole experience has taught me a lot and I feel like a new person! I am lucky in that i have had no side effects/ symptoms yet from just having half a thyroid and fingers crossed it will stay this way in the future! If any one has any questions please ask me
