Any hypo treatment goals in U.S. measures?

I have the article that includes Dr. Toth's recommendations about lab values for TSH, T3 and FT4 when treating hypothyroidism. The problem is his recommendations are expressed differently from how my U.S. lab measures things.

He says "This ‘exogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism’ is not dangerous as long as serum T3 is unequivocally normal – that is, serum total around T3 1.7 nmol/l (reference range 1.0-2.2 nmol/l)."

I was surprised to not find any discussion of FREE T3 goals.

My lab is using a range for T3 expressed as ng/dL (nano-grams per deciliter), so I can't be sure my doctor will be able to make the conversion from nano-moles per liter. My lab gives the range for T3 as 60 - 0981 ng/dL, and my value is 68.

I found a web site that allows me to calculate that 68 ng/dL is the equivalent of 1.05 nmol/L. So my level is about 0.7 nmol/L too low, but I don't think my doctor would willingly go through all kinds of extra steps to figure out these levels. amamanualofstyle.com/page/s...

Are there any publications that discuss treatment goals for hypothyroidism in terms easily understood by U.S. doctors?

Dr Toft gave a talk recently and the question of Total T/Free T3 mentioned in the quote came up. He basically said that the same applies to Free T3 (that's generally what's measured in the UK).

As far as converting the units of measurement are concerned, there really is no need. As far as T3 goes in Dr Toft's quote

"serum total around T3 1.7 nmol/l (reference range 1.0-2.2 nmol/l)."

that is 58% through it's range. So you can equate that to any unit of measurement, as long as the T3 stays within the range then it's fine. He did say something along the lines of not wanting to see T3 at the very top of the range.

You can do conversions at endmemo.com

I have just read an interesting book The Functional Approach to Hypothyroidism written by Kenneth Blanchard M.D. He successfully treated thousand of patients over many years treating only by how they felt. He states that only about 20% of his patients did well on Levo T4 alone and that these were mainly younger people. He lived and worked in the US it's well worth a read.
