Transdermal Magnesium - Does anyone have issues?

I seem to have a bit of an odd situation here.

I've been supplementing D3 and K2 for some time, following a loading course prescribed by my GP. At the end of September I started using Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil every night, on the understanding it is the 3rd leg to the stool to D3 and K2.

I started applying this to my arms, which always tingles quite a bit afterwards. I have no idea how long for, as I apply it immediately before bed, and usually drop off quickly. After a couple of weeks patches of eczema flared in the crooks of both elbows, so I concluded that wasn't the site for me.

I changed to my tummy, but after a similar period the tingling changed from being fine to being uncomfortable. I switched to my upper thighs (avoiding the backs of my knees) and after a similar period the same thing happened.

Going back to my arms, the flaring happened after 2 or 3 days, so back to tummy - again uncomfortable after a couple of years, and now my legs are uncomfortable too.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, did you find a solution? If you did, what was it?

I must say, since using the Magnesium, my sleep has improved, even though I slept well before, so I'm reluctant to give it up, although I'm running our of practical sites to apply the stuff to.

I don't use it, I tried a magnesium oil but couldn't stand the feel of it on my skin.

From ancient-minerals.com/too-mu...

Itching, stinging, and post-application skin dryness are all perfectly average reactions that first time [magnesium oil] users may experience, and there’s a chance you may not experience them at all. But, if you are experiencing skin irritation that surpasses simple itching, becomes a rash, causes prolonged redness and irritation, or causes you to break out, we recommend that you follow the Application Instructions and dilute the oil until your body has had a chance to adapt. You can then slowly increase the magnesium level in your solution as you become more accustomed.

You may also want to look into one of our more “sensitive skin friendly” options such as our bath flakes, lotion, or our new Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil Ultra.

Also, look at the ingredients, could you be reacting to something there other than the magnesium?

Have you tried an oral supplement? One of those might be suitable

Thanks SeasideSusie.

I have read that on the Ancient Minerals site, but thought I'd try to find out what experiences others had had too.

I think I'll try diluting it down a bit first. (Maybe 50ml in a small spray bottle, as that could be a controlled dilution.)

I elected to do the transdermal application as, allegedly, the uptake is much better.

I do sleep incredibly well on it though!

Calm Vitality magnesium powder is cheap and easy to use

Best in afternoon or evening as is excellent for improving sleep

Must be four hours away from Levo

Starting on low dose....and increase slowly...too much can cause diarrhoea!

Hi, personally I find the best place is the soles of my feet, doesn’t itch and seems to still work well..

Good luck!

I've used it on my feet too (I've tried almost , everywhere!) but avoided the soles of my feet as I find I need to wash my hands after application because I don't like going to bed with oil on my hands, when I might rub my eyes, for example.

Hiya, I spray it on my feet, therefore don’t touch it, just rub my feet together. It soaks in fairly quickly anyway

I tried oil and didn't like the tinglimg or the smell. I didn't use it long enough to experience eczema. I now use Kalm Assure powdered magnesium and drink a glass before bed. I find it helps with sleep and constipation.

I may have to give the powder/solution a go.

Mag Citrate Powder has worked for me. Epsom Salt baths are good too - none of the tingles with them and nice feeling skin too if added to any bubbles (soap enhances the uptake of Magnesium through the skin according to Dr Myhill). The transdermal oil is ok on my lower back only and need a Paracetemol to take my mild off the sting.

Oh wow. Much as I admire your resilience, there is zero way I'll be taking paracetamol to deal with this - especially when there appears no robust test to measure any deficiency of Magnesium.

I'm pretty loathe to using Parcetemol, so I only use the transdermal oil in an absolute emergency when my back is playing up! Paraetemol is bad for the liver, so I rarely use it.. which is why I stick to Mag Citrate for the majority of the time. I really notice if I forget it as I will start to stiffen up, get migraine symptoms and am more easily stressed.

Hi- I use the ‘better you’ brand of magnesium oil. Only stung the first two times.

I don’t like the sticky feeling of it so I usually use it before I have a shower and then wash it off after half hour or so.

As it’s a salt it will dry the skin out quite a bit too hence eczema etc

Diluting is a good measure but you might want to moisturise the skin first /over time also.

I just had the mild prickling/tingling when I first started to use magnesium oil but it soon went away. You are reacting quite badly. I'd not continue like that. Try the dilution, but also try their bath soak, either flakes or liquid. You could also try on of the BetterYou magnesium products in case it's something to do with the brand. I'm currently using their lotion, which also smells nice.

I'm not a great one for baths, so the prospect of a daily soak doesn't appeal.

I am away on business for 3 nights this week, and will give the whole thing a rest for that period, then likely start again, using a diluted solution.

If that doesn't work, I'll go to an oral solution.

I found it actually stung - for hours. I take a liquid magnesium supplement now. That seems fine.

Could you share which supplement you take?

I've had some great responses, so thank you everyone for your feedback.

I just wanted to update folks, should it e helpful to anyone else.

I have been trying some magnesium oil "diluted" 50/50 with water, and shaking it very well before spraying. Thus far, I am able ot tolerate the same dose (i.e. 12 squirts of the well shaken, diluted fluid, rather than 6 undiluted), without an skin rereractions.

I'll stick with this until the little spray bottle I used is empty, then consider how I move forward from there.
