Doctor is definitely wrong. Underactive as well as overactive thyroid can cause anxiety. Another GP who doesn’t understand how important thyroids are... :(

I’ve had a little hunt for some more info about why - there is quite a bit, including studies - but this is quite a nice explanation:

No probs - when undermedicated I get very anxious myself but I’d never really thought to look up why, so you’ve helped me out in asking the question. :)

I've experienced anxiety with both too much and too little thyroid medication so I think it's very possible that both under and overactive thyroid can cause anxiety. The description of anxiety is subjective so what your doc means by anxiety and what you mean by anxiety may be different. However, the main point is that you feel out of sorts and worried, I expect, and that can be a result of lacking thyroid hormone.

Anxiety can be caused by other factors though such as overactive parathyroid glands, some heart conditions etc, so worth ruling out other possibilities.

*sigh*. Yes, being hypo causes anxiety too. Best not to mention it or they'll have you anti-depressants before you can sneeze. And they won't really help.
