Leaky Gut: has anyone had this, and can give me some advice ?

Hi, I have had ' leaky gut' now for about a month and would love some advice as to how others have dealt with it. I have read that it is extremely common in Hashimotos people (Isabella Wentz book), and I appear to have most of the symptoms. It's very uncomfortable and debilitating with all the IBS symptoms ! --

I have been taking Glutamine for two weeks , but that hasn't really made much difference, and I'm changing my Probiotics.

But I also notice in Isabella's book that NAC is good for gut permeability. Has anyone taken this ?

I would really welcome any advice/experience from fellow sufferers.........thanks

draxe.com/leaky-gut-diet-tr...

have a look at this and see if it helps with your questions. Going gluten and dairy free has helped me but there's so much more....

Thank you endofdays for your reply.

It's VERY helpful. I've been gluten and dairy free for years. But I do eat rice quite often and I've noticed on Draxe's site that rice is a no go. I do eat coconut yogurt, but I'd love to get hold of coconut kefir. It's not sold anywhere near me !

I've never thought of sprouting grains ! Have you had any? And what is marshmallow root, have you had any of that?

I'm going to start eating Sauerkraut. Don't like the taste, but I know it's so good for the gut ! Also going to buy a slow cooker as I've recently found a bone broth recipe from Hemsley and Hemsley specifically for slow cookers. So I can leave it to do the job itself !

drAxe also suggests licorice root, but as that is an adaptogen I won't have that as it was an adaptogen (recommended by a well known specialist), that pushed my cortisol down to the floor.....Hence digestive issues ( among other issues)!

I really appreciate your replying to me. Thanks very much ! I've now got more to work with !

Rice is a member of the grass family and so will have proteins similar to gluten.

Thanks Dulaigh,

yes ,now you're reminding me I do remember that , but it had slipped my mind. Low Cortisol obviously plays havoc with my thinking as well as my digestion !! Thanks again.

You're welcome. It's an ongoing pursuit to find what's best for your system. I haven't had the marshmallow root etc in fact I'm about to embark on a 30 day cleanse with Arbonne. Heard and seen great results. Not necessarily from autoimmune affected folks but it's aimed at the gut so I'm starting Monday 5th Nov. I'll post after I'm done with results. All the best on your healing journey! It's been, for me, every day a school day!! Functional doctors definitely the best way to go. They get to the root!

Oh, thank you endofdays, that's very kind if you to let me know how you get on with your Arbonne course. I did see a functional doctor in May when I had a 'flatlining' cortisol from my Saliva test. And he was not good on Adrenals. He prescribed a strong multivitamin that also had 2lots of Adaptogens in at 500mg each. And I had already told him that it was long term use of an adaptogen that had got me in the low adrenal state. He wasn't sure what to do after that , except recommend I take some Ginkgo Biloba 6,000mg, super strength. - well I certainly wasn't strong enough to take that. So we parted company. Where is your functional doc based.

Oh dear, not good. I've not ventured to functional doc yet just read and watched loads of videos. Once I've done cleanse and redone my bloods I'll see where to from there. Thanks for your info. I didn't know about the adaptogen stuff! Learning every day!!

Dr. Michael Ruscio's site's drruscio.com/ is wonderful for gut issues. Search for leaky gut there. His articles are researched. My mother bought his book & it's helped her tremendously. When you sign up at his site, you'll get weekly info & interviews.

I remember my gut giving me problems. I like Kefir by The Collective Dairy, and Nush dairy free yoghurts.

The Kefir flavours are :- coconut, turmeric & honey and plain. The Nush yoghurts flavours are:- caramel & hibiscus ....... lush! and blueberry. They are made from almond milk and like Kefir, contain live cultures, good for our gut.

The yoghurts are so deliciously creamy and with non of the acidity that you can find with usual yoghurts. I like to pile in the blueberries with my yoghurts.

Yesterday I came across & bought Biona organic Kimchi (fermented cabbage), so I take a desert spoonful of that with a meal.

Hope that's helpful 😊

Those products sound wonderful. You must have a very good health food shop near you ? Love the sound of the coconut kefir, and the yogurts . I'm green with envy !

The kimchi sounds very similar to the Sauerkraut. I can get that quite easily, but I don't think I could get the Biona Kimchi.

Thanks for helping '

I get the yoghurts & Kefir from Sainsbury's, but imagine other supermarkets will have same or similar. The kimchi, I get from The Grape Tree healthfood shop. But your taking sauerkraut anyway.

A word on glutamine, do stick with, it's not a quick fix. It's helps plug those leaky gut holes & looks after the intestinal wall. I continue to use after all these months and it has other advantages too.

Thanks Paula, we only have a fairly small sainsburys in our small town , and they ' get what they are sent !' I have asked them to try and order some coconut yogurts. But to no avail . However I've made a note of your stuff and I will look out for them when going to other supermarkets.

Thanks for the info on the glutamine. I was wondering how long it would take. Patrick Holford does his own enzyme capsules that also contain glutamine. It's called DigestPro

Thinking about that product too !!!

I'll also check out DigestPro, not heard of it, thanks 🙂

Your very welcome.

Thanks for your help ! I'm going to get it myself. I just want to take the Glutamine ,increased probiotics, Sauerkraut etc about a month first to let things settle, and then I'll get some. Unfortunately although Patrick Holford is excellent, I think his products are quite expensive. I'd love to go to one of his seminars , but they are very dear and you have to get in early .

Just been to supermarket and I do apologise as I got the flavours all wrong with the Kefir! Still nice though 😉

I found going gluten free saw a massive improvement for me. Gluten actually makes me so sick my body has tremors.

I also introduced probiotics and researched to find the best one. The one I found was on amazon and quickly settles my stomach within a few days.

My advise would be to try one piece of advice at a time and see what works but cutting out gluten is essential. Most ppl can’t stomach gluten let alone anyone with hashimotos or any autoimmune diseases.

Wentz has some great advice but something’s I’ve tried have actually made me worse. So be careful. We need stability with our health and I’ve found sometimes adding or removing things has long terms affects to correct. Not all advice suits us all. We have to find what’s right for us as individuals.

Just saw your gluten and dairy free. I went grain free too for 4 months and then reintroduced rice occasionally. But I do find being on a low carb gluten and grain free works best for me.

Yes you're so right. It's the same with probiotics. Not all brands suit everybody!!! By the way which is the brand that is so good for you? .......

I have just changed my probiotic back to one I used about a year ago, and now that is having some effect. Whereas I had stopped it previously because I'd been on it for a while and I felt it had got less effective ! Could it be a case of 'a change is as good as a rest'!

Yes I'm going to do things carefully. Thanks for your help !

I take:

MicroBiotic Plus 7.5 billion Probiotics (7 strains) with 250mg Prebiotics. 60 vegan capsules. £15.45 on amazon.

Thanks, I will look into it. And I will definately keep a note of it, should my current one turn out to be not so effective !!

Thanks, yes it does for me too, but I got a bit lax with rice over past couple of months, as it certainly soothed my bowel. However I was oblivious to what it really does in the gut, ie, the gluten rice contains !
