NDT question does the T4 stay in your body like thyroxine

I am currently on T3 mono therapy but am thinking of trying NDT. When I was on thyroxine I didn’t do very well on it. Not sure if it was an intolerance or defective gene. When I stoped it it too about 3 months to leave my system. Is the T4 in NDT the dames does it take months to clear from your system. any help on this is most appreciated x

The T4 in NDT behaves just like pure T4. Half of any dose is gone in about a week and during the next week, half of the remainder. For T3 in NDT, half disappears in a day and half of the remainder the next day and so on and so on.

Thank you. I was a bit bothered in case it was in my system for months. But it does sound like it leaves fairly swiftly 😘

Hiya,

Your own body will store a month's worth of T4 if you are making it yourself or taking synthetic Levothyroxine. The reason we store a month's supply is that it gets converted to T3, T2 and T1 within the thyroid gland and liver. NDT contains natural T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin and you will store a month's worth of NDT T4 gradually over a period of time because if you have been taking T3 only your body will not have any reserve of T4 and so will use up the NDT T3 quickly. You need to bear in mind that the NDT will have 4 times the amount of T3 so, if you've been taking a high dose of T3 and suddenly change to NDT you might not feel too good for a little while until your hormones come back into balance.

I hope this helps.

Hi TT, I’m not sure I would make any T4 myself. I had RAI for Graves so thyroid completely destroyed. I only currently have the T3. Was thinking about the NDT as it had more of what I would have had naturally. I think the endo said to also have some T3 with it. X

I've had part of my thyroid gland removed to remove thyroid cancer five and half years ago. I don't make any T4 and the synthetic stuff makes me feel more and more ill. I've had Levothyroxine only, Levothyroxine and T3 combined, then NDT, then it was taken off me and so I bought my own but couldn't afford it and then went on T3 only. I don't do well on the T3 and feel really hypothyroid and so I'm going back on the NDT again. I personally feel a lot better on the NDT and I think it's not just the T4 and T3 but the T2 helps with metabolism and the T1 is needed for cognition and the calcitonin is needed to regulate my calcium levels because I also have a parathyroid gland missing and, this is needed to regulate calcium levels in the blood and I tend to be deficient.

I hope this explains my position and helps you make the right choice for you.
