I was recently requested to reduce my thyroxine medication the reason being I was over stimulated. I had a total thyroidectomy in1984 and my medication has never altered until now. I am now having migraines blurred vision and flashing lines everyday and am getting scared to drive just in case I get one, how can I be sure I’m on the correct dose and why should it alter if I’m not producing any thyroxine. The headaches are worrying.

Have you got the blood results and ranges? If you haven’t got them you are entitled to get a copy of them all ! You can even now get all your medical records for fee if you want the new EU law that came out last May..
Have your bloods changed and why did they say you was over medicated?
It should really be how you feel not the bloods , it depends if your T3 was over Range.. if it is just your TSH that’s a low your Gp will be another of the GPS that are not very educated on thyroid
Why did you have the TT?
So if you can get a copy of blood results with the ranges and post on here their are people on here that can let you know if you are over medicated or not.
Some that have a TT have to have TSH suppressed to feel well , I had sub thyroidectomy and my TSH is 0.004 undetectable but if they tried to lower it I just can’t get out of bed as go into a very deep sleep..
When you put blood results up someone will be along and advise you .
Good luck xx
Migraine is a common enough symptom of low thyroid hormones. Symptoms of over stimulation can be a lack of thyroid hormones as well as by too much.Usually the pulse gives a good indication of whether under or overmedicated. As already suggested posting your blood results will help you get some more conclusive responses as well as a list of your current symptoms, temp and pulse.
I would definitely go and have a full eye test to make sure it is just a migraine that is causing the flashing lines and not a detached retina or anything nasty. I had a detached vitreous - well I had one in each eye eventually - which is an age thing it’s harmless but weird and it can flash a bit.
Good advice I have had a detached retina but have never had a headache.
Before I had my Thyroid removed 14 months ago I had terrible migraines blurred vision blind spots but since I am no longer hyper they have gone. I dont know why if anyone can fathom this out please let me know. There's got to b a connection if u find it it may help your migraines...good luck
I get migraines. I cannot take levo if I wake with migraine symptoms, it just puts me straight in a full blown migraine. I take a tablet (Imigran) for the migraine and wait 3 hours (min) before taking my thyroid meds. (Levo & T3)
I think you should see an optician and also have your vitamin D level checked. Mine was very low and I don’t retain it. If my level is at a decent level my migraines are less severe and less frequent.
All worth a try.
Hope you get sorted very soon.
First have you got copies of the last blood tests that doctor said showed you were over medicated. Very often they just look at TSH or TSH and FT4 which is completely inadequate
Add results and ranges if you have them
Have you recently had a change in brand of Levothyroxine?
Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable.
Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription. Watch out for brand change when dose is increased or at repeat prescription.
Many patients do NOT get on well with Teva brand of Levothyroxine. Though it is the only one for lactose intolerant patients
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, FT3 and also very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or vitamins
thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...
Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.
All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. When on Levothyroxine, take last dose 24 hours prior to test, and take next dose straight after test. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)
Is this how you do your tests?
How much was dose reduced?
Just curious what do you take for thyroid hormone replacement? I have terrible migraines and take Levoxyl.
I tried NDT but got chest pain at 1 1/2 grains and that amount left me with fatigue. I feel stuck it's so annoying to switch.
Yes I take a combo right now. 112 Levoxyl and a compounded slow release T3
