NSAIDS

Hi Everyone, the Doctor has prescribed NSAIDS for a shoulder problem. I have Hashimoto's disease and currently on the AIP Diet to heal my gut; last thing I need is NSAIDS!

Is there anything else less harmful that I can take?

Is the shoulder issue a long-term problem or is it something you've done to it recently that might heal up given the right treatment?

I don't know of any pain killers that are harmless. They all have the possibility of some side effects or long-term effects.

Paracetamol - liver problems

NSAIDs - gut problems

Tricyclic anti-depressants e.g. amitriptyline - addiction and other problems

Some SSRIs - addiction

Opiods e.g. Tramadol - addiction

If you want to avoid taking pills then perhaps an anti-inflammatory diet, yoga, swimming, massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic might help. (I've never understood the difference between those last three!)

Ha me neither. Its like tendonitis, had it about a month but thought it was related to my Thyroid medication but thinking back maybe I have aggravated it having just started back to Yoga after five weeks off. Doctor is keen to help and I hate saying no because he doesn't understand why. I have been on the AIP Paleo diet now for 6 weeks and I don't want to upset my good work! I think I will just put up with it and tell him its cured! easier

You could try CBD oil. Lots of people have good pain relief with that. Do you know about DBD oil?

Suggest that you speak to the dispensing pharmacist if you have concerns.

I have PA and I'm hashimotos but personally don't have problems taking NSAIDs. Risks are based on averages. The risks are very small or the drugs would not be licensed for use. A pharmacist will be in a better position to advise you than your GP on what the risks are and what the alternatives are.

I had a trapped nerve last year for which I was prescribed a course of naproxen. Naproxen is usually given either in a gastric resistant form or with a PPI. I was given in a gastric resistant form .... which meant that the tablets actually took hours to dissolve as I don't have much stomach acidity because of the PA. Whilst I was on the naproxen I had some silent migraines but didn't have any with headache and severe gut spasms - which made me realise that NSAIDs would probably work better for treating the migraines than the triptans which no longer seem to be effective.

Thanks Gambit52, however I am more concerned about the adverse effects on my stomach. I have spent the last 5/6 weeks trying to heal my gut with the AIP diet. Last thing I want to do is interfere with that process.
