Fluctuating tyroide

I'm 51 and have chronic osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Since my late 20s I have had 3 hip replacements elbow and shoulder replacement. My nxt op is a jaw replacement and in time I will need both knees replaced. I have put on 7 stone in the last year. But because my thyroid is high and then low my gp will not do anything, as he says he dosent know why it's fluctuating and has left it at that. I'm so annoyed with him and his attitude. But I don't know where to turn for help. And this is making my depression much worse. Can you please help.

Your best plan is to have a fullset of thyroid, antibodies and vitamin tests done privately and post the results with ranges for advice .Medichecks usually have deals on a Thursday ,Blue Horizon have deals from time to time.

I did enquire about going private and it's £200 just for the consultation. I'm registered disabled so I cannot afford to go private. Thank you for responding xx

You misunderstood ,I was not suggesting private doctors but private laboratories that send a fingerprick test kit for diy use or for extra cost you can have a blood draw at a private hospital by a nurse and then you post the kit to the lab. sadly it may still be beyond your funds but check the websites of the labs I mentioned or find them via the Thyroid UK site.

Sorry to hear your having such a difficult time but lovely to see you still smiling!

Ask your GP to refer you to an Endocrinologist. Also in the meantime as it can take a few months to get an appt request he tests your thyroid antibodies as hashimotos can cause your bloods to fluctuate.

You need to see a specialist as he has limited knowledge and should respect your request for a referral to ensure you get treated properly.

Thank you for your reply. He says he's done blood test for anti bodies and I asked for a referral and his answer was to come back for another blood test in 3 months. I told him this has been going on since 2015, but he didn't listen so I'm going to see a different gp on the 12/09/2018. So hopefully I might get somewhere with a different Dr. He was very rude as he's asked me twice if I'd bought anything off the internet??? I told him of course not, and when he weighed me he said I'd lost 5 kilos. I said yes because I'm starving myself.... He said well at least it's working. What a thing to say xx

Definitely a bad GP glad your seeing someone else!

You have every right to see a thyroid specialist. If they refuse ask why and for this to be put in writing for your records and to discuss with the practice manager - I’m sure this won’t be necessary.

I think you just had a very unhelpful GP and I hope the next one will be more supportive. Also ask your practice for your blood tests results including your antibodies if you haven’t already got them. They will confirm hashimotos graves etc and then you can push forward in getting treatment.

Obviously with bone issues weight is a huge factor in your care not starving yourself.

The obvious reason for thyroid results fluctuating is that you have Hashi's, but is your numbskull GP even doing the right tests? Have you ever asked for a print-out of your results? That's the wisest thing to do, and if you live in the UK, it's your legal right to have one, they cannot refuse without breaking the law. You need to know exactly what was tested, and exactly what the results were. Never just take your doctor's word for anything! :)

Hi thanks for your reply. He said that I've had the blood test for Hashis and when I phoned the surgery for the results the receptionist said, it was written...No further action?? And yet since then I've had another blood tests where my levels were high. He never explains the reason for this. He just says he dosent know why and too wait for my nxt blood test

I would ring the surgery and ask for copies of all your results with ranges and ask for them to be popped in an envelope and say you will be along to collect them in a few days. Maybe your surgery has on-line access to records - worth asking. It will help with posting here with more information too. It's a good way to monitor your progress and check what has been missed too. 😊

Yes thanks I will do

Ask GP to test Thyroid Antibodies . Say you want to confirm or eliminate Autoimmune Thyroiditis. If refused ask for a referal to an Endocrinologist and/or an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid.

Fluctuating Thyroid function blood tests results is typical of Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's ).
