What is slippery elm good for? Some people tell me it helps stomach issues. Does it help acid reflux or IBS?

A few people on the forum have said they have stomach issues with being hypo thyroid. I’ve had issues since I’m 14 but they became much worse after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have had ulcers have Barrett’s esophagus colon polyps and diverticulosis. Does slippery elm or any other herbs really help?

Slippery Elm helped heal my gastritis. It really works wonders on the stomach lining.

Thankyou so much for replying. I bought the actual herb and steep it as a tea. Is that right way to take it or you take pills

I mix a spoonful of the powder with a little water and drink on an empty stomach

You could try marshmallow root, either in capsules or a tea. It's a mucilage so really soothing of the gastric mucosa & also for the mouth & esophagus. It's supposed to help inflammation.

I have found that goat milk kefir is a big help and great for general health. I wouldn't buy ready-made from the supermarket as it is Pasteurised after being fermented, which defeats the whole object. It usually tastes horrible too. It is very easy to get the milk kefir grains and make your own at home. I prefer the goat milk but cows milk is OK too just never UHT or skimmed milk. Making it is very simple and only takes about five minutes of each day.

I've used Slippery Elm in capsule form in the past. I found it very useful to take before going to bed when my burning stomach pain was very bad and it is very soothing.

My only concern with it was how much it might reduce absorption of other meds and supplements I took.

Why would it intefere with absorption of medicine and supplements? Please explain. Thankyou.

It turns into a kind of mucilaginous jelly which coats the stomach. I wonder if it forms a barrier which prevents absorption of meds and supplements. I don't know that it does. I just wonder if it might.

I could have researched this, but I never did.

I take 2 tbsp of slippery elm powder, i mix it with hot water, cinnamon and honey. Works wonders for me. I use it for acid reflux (which I only starting having problems since I started taking synthroid). Works great for a acidic stomach as well.
