What are your current results for
TSH
FT4
FT3
You need to know your FT3 as well as the others, it's the most important result as it tells you if you are converting T4 to T3 well enough. T3 is the active hormone that every cell in our body needs. If your FT3 is low it will be difficult to lose weight.
You also need to know if your nutrient levels are optimal, they need to be for thyroid hormone to work.
Vit D
B12
Folate
Ferritin
If you can't get all the tests done with your GP then you can do what hundreds of us here do and use Medichecks or Blue Horizon for a private home test.
I envy you ! I'm still 4st overweight - was 5 !
Only way I know is to eat healthy well balanced reducing diet and gradually increase gentle exercise such as walking and /or swimming from 3 minutes , 3 times a week to 30 minutes at least 3 times a week up to as much as daily.
I’m about 2 stone over weight which is a lot when you consider I have always been 7 1/2, I’ve tried everything over the years and it kept creeping up, nothing worked, I’ve asked my go to test me for Candida as I have really bad reactions when I eat yeast still waiting for this test so I’ve started a Candida diet and also have primary Billiary cirrhosis now too due to toxins not escaping, I’m convinced this is my underlying problem as well as my gluten intolerance, not sure if this helps you, good luck Carrie. I totally feel your pain😢
There's no thyroid history in your profile, i.e. what were you diagnosed with, what are you prescribed and dose?
You should lower carbs. There a tons of low carb recipe sites. Low carb is moderate protein & high fat, good fats--dairy (grass fed, when possible), extra virgin olive oil (don't heat), virgin coconut oil, avocado oil, etc. No processed vegetable oils.
Only problem is it's impossible to eat much fat with a liver condition as well
I’m on 175mcg, I do have hashi. Had it since 2007.
If you add results for thyroid and vitamins members can advise
What supplements do you take and are you on strictly gluten free diet?
Hi Carrie97 do you track your calories on an app like myfitness pal? If you dont I suggest you do. Unfortunately for people who are hypo just eating healthy is not enough you need to know exactly how many calories you consume daily so that you can make sure your eating in a calorie deficit. That is literally the only way I can keep my weight at a healthy level. As soon as I stop tracking and start relaxing my diet the weight starts creeping up.
At the end of the day a calorie deficit combined with exercise will be the best solution. All fad diets are only temporary fixes
Everyone is different and you have to find what works for you. For me even with a low T3 level I have found a low carb diet has worked. By reducing to on average 65-95g of carbs a day I've lost 15kg since end of April. Not ketogenic and I'm definitely not in ketosis. HbA1c is amazing too. I also did the AIP and have felt hugely better.
Yes I’m completely gluten and dairy free now,I am also getting an infrared sauna for the PBC and I do take milk thistle to. I’ve been on NDT 2 years now 🙂
I can recommend an excellent nutritionist, she is hugely knowledgable and has a brilliant fb group Healthy Fabulous Females and is about to start a new Forever Plan group in September.
Yes please can you recommend to me
I used to weigh 18 stone, now am down to 12. I have been hypothyroid for about 30 years, diagnosed with Hashimotos about 4 years ago.
I started about 7 years ago by simply noticing serving sizes on packages, i.e., a serving of those delicious cookies might be two, when I had assumed it'd be four. I also used the Weight Watchers program for a bit to learn to eat more balanced meals and more fiber. I exercised more (walking, stationary bike). Then, due to food allergies I cut out wheat (not gluten) and nuts. This eliminated a lot of empty carbs and sugars from my diet. Also became lactose intolerant, so not having as much dairy, either. I also believe being diagnosed with sleep apnea and treated for it has given me much of my energy back.
It's a lifestyle. Rather, must become a lifestyle, at least in my experience.
Forgot to mention that I did have plateaus every so often and just minded not to regain during those times. Sometimes, they lasted a few months, one was for about a year. It's not about punishing yourself, but changing habits for the better - and identifying health issues that contribute to your issues.
I totally agree with your assessment.
I have lost weight by addressing my vitamin deficiencies and adding alot more/ cooking with healthy fats. I know you mentioned being gluten free and dairy free. I’ve found eating more veggies than meat(still having a good portion of different kinds too suh as wild caught salmon, beef, and chicken), and cooking with oils such as red palm oil, ghee (if you arent allergic to any of these) avocadoes and avocado oil, coconut oil. Also more fiber such as cassava and tigernut. Not sure if you already do these things just sharing what has been working for me. It can he time consuming so we stir fry alot and cook the meat in a pot and eventually add the healthy fat as well as the veggies.
Thanks I’ve ordered blue horizon tests as gp won’t do t3, hopefully I’ll know next wk
