Hi My son has now had his iron panel done with Medichecks. Can someone help with them - Medichecks seem to think their all normal but as he has Hashimotos we're not sure if he needs to supplement anything:
Iron Status
IRON 17.85 umol/L 10.60 - 28.30
T.I.B.C 62.45 umol/L 41.00 - 77.00
TRANSFERRIN SATURATION 28.58 % 20.00 - 55.00
FERRITIN 147 ug/L 30.00 - 400.00
Inflammation Marker
CRP - HIGH SENSITIVITY 2.2 mg/l 0.00 - 5.00

igher end for men and your son's is 41% through range
Transferrin Saturation:
35 to 45%, higher end for men and your son's is 28.58%
TIBC: Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron, high in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron. Your son's is 59% through range so is about mid-range, certainly not high which would indicate the need for supplementing iron.
Ferritin: Low level virtually always indicates need for iron supplementation, high level with low serum iron/low saturation indicates inflammation
or infection, high level with high serum iron and low TIBC indicates excess iron, over range with saturation above 45% suggests hemochromatosis. So your son's is 31% through range
If these were my results, I would start by eating liver regularly, maximum 200g per week, and see if things have improved in 3 months' time. Ferritin would be best at around half way through range, liver and other iron rich foods should raise ferritin level apjcn.nhri.org.tw/server/in... Liver doesn't have to be taken as a meal on it's own, it can be added to casseroles, curries, bolognese, cottage pie. There's also liver pate and black pudding.
