It may not always be your thyroids, just a timely warning.

4 weeks ago, I started having AF with my heart and thought it was my thyroids. I made sure I was taking the right dose of Carbimazole. My last blood test was 2 months ago with a T4 of 23.

A week later I was still having periods of AF and went to the doctor. He confirmed my heart was all over the place and that I would have to take at least 20mg of Carbimazole daily. I tried to tell him my stomach was bothering me badly and I was bloating after meals with pain. He just did not listen. He took my bloods, gave me an EKG, put me on Beta Blockers and sent me on my way.

I took one Propranolol when I arrived home. One hour later, it all happened. I totally crumpled. Could not get off the toilet, was having panic attacks for no reason, felt burning in my chest and stomach several times, felt cold (it was a warm day), had unsteady legs and could hardly lift my arms. So to bed for the next 4 days trying to figure out what happened.

In the meantime, after 5 days wait, the doctor decided to open up my T4 test and put a nice 18 under T4, this meant it was not my thyroids that was causing the AF.

Thankfully, my daughter, who lives in Holland, is into allergic reactions and the role histamines play. Yep, I had had a nasty allergic reaction and when I took the Propranolol, it destroyed the DOA (enzyme that gets rid of histamine) from my body and made me so much worse.

I am recovering now, with the help of Piriton, taken in children's doses and homeopathic remedy I had for allergies called Ignatia 1M strength.

Watch out for those symptoms, allergic symptoms copy those of thyroid disorders.

I hope this helps someone else.

Hi there you probably already know this but 2 months until your next blood test is too long!! Every 4-6xweeks. I chose not to take betablockers and put up with the palps and ectopic beats but they do ease considerably after a while-i have ectopic beats like many others on this forum, i was told its down to a the meds or thyroid disease, usually if i need to come down a dose i get them worse or on a dose change😕 im only on 2.5mgs every other day now after 10 months of graves and hashis.

But im sure there is some sort of reaction between carbi and propranol? Others maybe able to comment. But make sure you test regular.😊😊

I should have explained that I have had overactive thyroids for over 30 years. I am usually quite steady, as you can see two months ago I was on T4 ....23 and now, due to the increase of 4 X5 mg Carbi a week, I am at 18.

The point is not the thyroid problem so much but be careful that other illnesses mimic thyroid symptoms. It had the doctor totally fooled for one.

Lol😊 its ok, i did look in your bio and you only had this post but welcome to the forum and lots of people will find your post informative-so it was the beta blockers that you had a allergy towards? I only took them for 2 weeks a year ago but decided it was one last drug to take and at that point i had been prescribed carb but glad you are now feeling better-keep in touch.🌟🌟

No, these are two separate issues. I took the same beta blocker in the beginning. Same as you. I gave up in 2 weeks because they were not helping. I was not allergic to them.

The allergy thing was ongoing. On thinking back, I can see that I ignored the warnings. When I took the beta blocker, it killed off Diamine Oxidase in my system, this allowed the histamine levels to rise and cause me all sorts of problems.

I am, at the moment, taking homeopathic remedies to steady the stomach and get rid of the histamine build up. Once that is done, I should be back to normal.

Fingers crossed.
