Hi peeps,
I'm hypo, on 125mcgof level a day.... I've started itching... from head to toe, feels like ants crawling all over me.... advice please....
Is it Teva?
What's that?
Teva is a manufacture of levo.
When my prescription changed & I was give levo by teva I itched, like I hadn’t rinsed soap off properly.(other folk may find a different manufacturer causes problems but lots find Teva causes problems) Talked to local Pharmacist...Taking antihistamine got rid of itch. I was able to contact GP surgey about it and now have written on prescription “ not Teva” and itching has gone.
Changed dose or brand recently?
Or had recent test for levels of B12, folate, ferritin and vitamin D
Actually yes... had one packet which was a different brand...
Always make sure you get same brand at each prescription
Teva especially upsets many patients
Thanks.. But, I've been taking antihistamines for hayfever for the last month or so, so hadn't noticed the itching, but I ran out of the antihistamines 3 days ago and the itching started/became noticeable, but the different brand was whilst taking the antihistamines and have been on my usual brand for the last few days... Would the effect last that long...
Might be as well go have a word with the Pharmacist as they should know the answer to your question. If it is possible the effects last a while then arrange with them not to give you the Brand that was new to you. Or if that can't be the rogue brand then ask what to do next. They may know if your usual brand has changed fillers or can check for you.
I went through a phase when I was itching. Mainly my arms and back. Not super bad, but bad enough to annoy me sometimes. Kinda went away. Every once in a while I get that itchy feeling. I read somewhere that it was a side effect of Levo.
I had the same when doctor increased my Levothyroxin from 25 to 50, it wore off after a while so hopefully the same will happen to you.
Hi Linny17. I have the same symptoms. Was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after feeling like there was something crawling under my skin. I also have all the pressure point pain but the doctor told me this was my nerves
Liver support could help (look up Itching and liver). I take milk thistle with my evening meal and Nac (an amino acid that supports liver and helps with blocked airways) with my evening Mag and Zinc supplements... These also help with energy levels (read Dr Isabella Wentz).
Yes, I've read that liver problems could cause itching. Have you had test results for liver function? I noticed on my last results including liver function that one result was outside normal range. Presumably nothing to worry about, because thyroid affects every organ in the body.
I'm new at this thyroid business, but it does seem likely, as others say, that the cause is the thyroxine brand and/or hay fever causing itching
As SlowDragon has mentioned, it's good to regularly have your cofactors checked. Being low in iron can sometimes cause itching.
I had a lot of itching while under-medicated on T4 only (for about 14 years). This disappeared when I started taking T3. It then came back briefly when I got my levels up to around optimum (after about 2 years), and after dropping my dose of T3 a little, it went away again. So it could be that you are either under or over-medicated.
Like dolphin5 I had intense pruritis for years when under-medicated. For me, it's also a sign that I need a B12 shot for pernicious anaemia.
HI Linny,
I experienced itchiness for a few months, my arms especially. Absolutely drove me crazy. At the time I was also craving salt and chewing on ice chips. I had lab work and I discovered I was anemic . I was put on iron tablets and all my symptoms improved in about 3 months. I guess my body wasn’t absorbing much of the iron I was getting from food because I take omeprazole for acid reflux. Good luck in finding answers.
Most hypothyroid patients have low stomach acid not high acid

I agree with SlowDragon. Omeprazole is used as a short term fix for symptoms, but a lot of GPs keep their patients on it for far longer than necessary making them prone to bone fractures etc.. There are ways of weaning off Omeprazole.... I managed it mostly through reducing dose, diet and timing of meals and so glad I did because I had low iron and B12 and magnesium deficiency. If you're worried about h pylori infection Mastic Gum is pretty good (though expensive) and also helps with oral health.
