I've started taking nature thyroid and Premarin and I'm itching like crazy and my skin has never been drier! Has anyone else found these same side effects from either medication? The nature thyroid dose is 130 mg ( 2 gr ) and the Premarin dose is 0.9 mg
Thank you

I would think itching is more likely to be an allergic reaction. Tablets have fillers in them to bulk them up and keep them stable so the easy way to test is to take an antihistamine an hour before and see if that stops it, if so then it is an allergy. I don't know what Premarin is, is it something you can do without for a few days to see whether thatcis the problem and it then stops or the itching. Intinues pointing to the nature thyroid. If that's the case ask your pharmacist if she can suggest a different one with different fillers. You may have to keep swapping till you find something that suits.
I had the same experience a few years ago when I switched from synthetic thyroid meds to Armour thyroid and started taking Ultragestan (progesterone) 100 mg tablets at the same time. I developed an unbearable itch after I had increased the Armour to 2 grains. I also had a bad rash on various parts of my body. I did a bit of research on patients' forums and found that Armour had had this effect on many people, so I stopped taking it and switched back to synthetic T4+T3. The itch eased, but didn't go away. I then researched Ultragestan and found that one if it's possible side effects is hives. So I stopped that as well. The itch stopped after a short time but it took a month or two for the rash to clear completely. I'm afraid that after this experience an allergy I had previously and which had gone away came back again and I am still trying to treat that. Oh and I did take antihistamines when the rash and itching started but they helped on a very limited basis. I would stop one of the two for a few days and see what happens and then if the itch doesn't clear, stop the other as well and try to find alternatives. I started using the cream version of progesterone a few months after this experience and that was alright. But I've stopped that now as well.
Liver support (e.g. milk thistle) may help as your liver will need to rid your body of whatever toxic substance that it's objecting to. Omega 3's are among the best natural anti-inflammatories; so worth taking plenty of those.
I had a bad reaction to Thyro-Gold, but not Nature Throid or WP Thyroid, both RLC meds. The latter has no fillers, which could be the issue, if you have an allergy.
HRT from female horse urine is known to have unpleasant side effects. I'm not sure what mine is made from, but I've had no negative side effects from Angelique HRT. My friend's sister is a gynaecologist, & recommended this brand as having the least side effects, though it's not a bio-identical HRT.
HRT is synthetic hormones, I didn't think about fillers. I get pellets inserted in my hip every couple months. My hormone levels don't stay up for the expected 6 months...I want to know where it goes.
There are bio-identical hormones available, but I believe they are very expensive. Wild yam for progesterone, that's often mentioned on this forum, & phyto-oestrogens from soy.
My spouse investigated the various female hormone preparations. She decided that she did NOT want to use Premarin, her findings were that it is not safe and is not a good fit for human biochemistry long-term. She uses a custom-compounded bioidentical estrogen+progesterone now.
As far as itching, it could be due to reaction to Naturethroid and/or Premarin, or could be due to hypothyroid itself. Before I became euthyroid, my skin was majorly dry and the itching drove me nuts. Do you have any test results that indicate you have become euthyroid, e.g. in-range FT3 and FT4?
I've been itching and my skin is so dry. It flakes. I've never had such dry skin in my life! I'm only on 60 mg of Armour, but have been really sick. Such fatigue, I can sleep all day long....went to endocrinologist, finally. He did all types of tests, I see him again this Tuesday. They do do an unreasoned of my thyroid, and found a nodule on my parathyroid, according to doc who did the test. If it's my parathyroid, I can get the surgery to get it removed, and my blood calcium will be back to normal and my osteoporosis has a chance to get better. Praying for an answer....
