tingling / itching

Hi, I have been taking T3 for a few weeks now and recently started dosing 25mcg around 8AM & 25mcg around 8PM. I am now (3 hours after last dose) experiencing tingling / itching sensations all over and am wondering am I over medicating or is this the T3 working ?

Some things you might want to check on, just to look for some clues ...

1) How is your heart rate and blood pressure?

2) How is your basal body temperature?

3) One thing you could try is to take an anti-histamine an hour before you take a dose of T3, just to see if it makes a difference. If the tingling and itching doesn't occur then you might have been getting an allergic reaction to one of the fillers or binders perhaps?

4) Are you sweating more than normal? Or showing any hyperthyroid signs?

5) You could try reducing your 8pm dose by 1/4 or 1/2 a pill for a few days to see if it makes a difference.

Thank you for your speedy reply humanbean :) I have no way of knowing my pulse rate, temperature or even what they are meant to be :/ I was just diagnosed a few weeks ago so this is all very new to me. I will try the anti histamine and see if that helps. :)

Heart rate and basal body temperature are useful statistics to monitor with thyroid disease. Blood pressure is useful as well. Blood pressure and heart rate monitors are relatively cheap if you felt the urge to buy one - you could look up reviews on Amazon or Boots website or Tesco website and any other obvious sources.

drrind.com/therapies/metabo...

Basal body temperature (BBT) is your temperature when you first wake up in the morning before you have even got out of bed, or lifted your head off the pillow. Any form of activity raises your body temperature slightly, so the idea is to measure it before you've raised it with activity.

Anyone who is hypothyroid tends to have a lower than normal body temperature, and a hyperthyroid person has a higher than normal body temperature. Some people who are hypothyroid and over-medicated (for example) may find they can tell because their BBT goes above normal. Pulse and BP tend to rise as well. Different people do respond differently though, so we have to monitor ourselves to find out what causes our bodies to react.

Humanbean, thanks for the reminder. next time my endo or GP tell me that I am overprescribed i will chuck thd heart rate/blood pressure one at them. They are both on the low side 😊

If you were only diagnosed a few weeks ago that's a very large dose to be on now I think. With any thyroid med it's best to start low and slowly build up.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds to me like you've increased too fast, stig5882.

Thanks for your advice Greygoose & bobsmydog :) I took an anti histamine this morning to relieve itching and I have reduced back to 12.5mcg this morning at 7 am (never slept all night) :( by 2pm I was struggling with very heavy legs and slight breathlessness so took another 12.5mcg. Will try to do without anymore until tomorrow (see if I can get some sleep tonight :/

Whatever your previous dose of thyroid hormones was, 50mcg is equal to about 150 or 170mcg levo.

Before you begin it's always a good idea to know what our blood pressure is, pulse, and temp. Then we have a guide when we take thyroid hormones to judge if the dose of hormones are correct.

what is my pulse rate & temperature supposed to be ? think I better go buy a thermometer and a blood pressure machine :/ This is all very complicated....

The above links will give you an idea of what is usually accepted as normal. But monitoring ourselves helps us to find out what is normal for us. Any changes can provide useful information about our state of health.

Get a thermometer that doesn't beep and you can incorporate this test as well. Before blood tests and levo were introduced this was one way hypo was diagnosed along with our clinical symptoms.

Thanks Shaws, I will try the anti-histamine and see what happens then if need be drop my dose down again. :)

Stig5882, if the itching and tingling have started shortly after you increased by 25mcg, which is a very large dose increase, it's likely due to overmedication. How much Levothyroxine were you prescribed before you started taking T3?

Doctor refuses to medicate me as my TSH is only 5.9 ( she said it has to be nearer 10) so I started self medicating with Tiromel.

Stig5882, I'll be reprimanded if I say what I think about your GP :x I think you've overcooked. 25-31.25mcg T3 would probably have been ample. You should order a thyroid panel to check FT3 level from Blue Horizon or Genova via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

'Overcooked'...... yup. Maybe take 12.5 mcg in the a.m. and 12.5 mcg in the p.m. MAX. TSH is logarithmic. Even 25 mcg per day may be excessive. Without fT4 and fT3 tests, it's a big guess as to what dose is appropriate. Taking too much T3 will suppress TSH so there's very low fT4 which isn't necessarily a good thing. T3 is metabolized quickly and T4 being a storage hormone is a good thing to have hanging about. Not everyone has T4 to T3 conversion problems.

thanks gabcad, I have reduced dose to 12.5mcg morning & afternoon to see how it goes. I know I have rushed the process :( (no patience thats my problem) lol but I will try to be good :) Thanks for your help. .... Loraine.

this happened to me a few times in the past, once when I started levo, once when I stopped birth control pills, both are hormonal changes.

Hi stig5882, I am self-medicating with T3, that I bought on hols beginning of July, it is really just experimentation. I was taking 2 x 25mcg, one morning, one late afternoon, but it seemed a bit over the top, so still on the same dosages, but splitting it in 4 doses, over the day, but not later that 6pm, otherwise keeps me awake. I was getting tingling as well, but now not. Shame we can't get slow release T3, that would be ideal, but the docs just won't prescribe T3 here at all in Newcastle.

I am on 125mcg of T4, but decided to drop the dose to 100mcg since last night, as I take mine last thing at night, so that nothing interferes with it. I also take ferrous fumerate 210mg, am very very low in iron, due to still menstuating normally at my age lol.

Here is an interesting article for you about RT3 dominance, every scrap that we learn is useful to us custommedicine.com.au/healt...

Let me know how you get on, and take care
